We heard Mantua was kind of safe so my son Mitch, and I headed up Friday afternoon.Went about 300 yards straight out from the ramp .As soon as we drilled holes we noticed little yellow nymphs squirming everywhere.Does anyone know what they are?
Anyway,we fished two hours. Mitch caught 1 rainbow and I caught skunk!
Came home and checked the reports on this sight ,and saw that people were killing the snot out of the bluegills over on the east side.
Was tempted to go back out this morning but did'nt dare brave the blizzard in my Corrolla.
As soon as the weather clears it could be a good time to take the kiddies up for some fast action pan fishin.
I wouldn't wait too long though. Early ice is best.
Good luck and happy fishing.

Yup - I hear ya. I was all kinds of psyched to hit my first ice, but by the time I got to the mouth of the canyon - the road wasn't SO bad, but it was "whiteout" city s far as visiblity, so I did an "exit - stage right" and headed to Wellsville city park, and hit the pond there. No ice at all, and lots of frisky planter bows bouncing around.
Plus - I had a live report from Lavaman who was out there (Mantua) with his kids, and hadn't got a bite Hmmm. Maybe they needed to move over to bluegill's ville!
Was geared for ice, so went with an rat-finky under bobber - tipped with either waxworm or nighty crawler. Both got attention, and the bobber went a bobbing. I was subject to limited time since my boy needed a ride, so I had about an hour to play. Hooked into a half dozen friskers, but only landed one. (grrr) Also managed to break the hook off my finky - so now I've got a glow body with no teeth!
Managed to hookup some trouts on one of my home-made spinners, so that's a first. Had hoped to venture out to Benson for some Kitty ventures (with carp strips), but ran out of time - so maybe today.
Seems like it got warm overnight - lots of melting going on! And here I thought we were on the path to the hard-deck! Maybe I should break out the boat once more!
Wanted to take some pix of the pond, but short on time - I didn't even get my bucket out of the car for a seat!
You mean this pond? It was a mess this morning.

We had good luck Friday morning. My post "Mantua fun!!!" Talks about it. I went back Saturday morning and caught more. They seemed to shut off by 10 am, though. I lost a rod Friday to a good sized fish. Almost was able to get it back, but the fish wouldn't give it back to us.

lol I wonder how many rods those mantua trout will have claimed by the end of the year.

Haha! I wouldn't be surprised if it was a bass. I was looking right at it. No bump at all; it just went right in. More than anything, I just want to know what was on the other end. It just ripped it right out of the rod holder. The only chance I had would have been if I had it in my hand. I just laughed, and still do.

Don't think that's the Wellsville pond. But if it's Mantua - looks like quite a mix of ice and snow. Watch out for the springs!!
Hit Bear River - by the Church in Benson, and though I may not have been fishing ON the ice, I was surely fishing AROUND the ice, and chunks were floating down river. Lost two of my new worm-spinner-harnesses loaded with carp strips. Grrr...
Tried over at Benson marina - under the bridge. Still lots of ice sheets to dodge. Nary a bit - bobber floating a worm tipped jig, and bottom offering of spinner-harness plus carp. Just kept waiting for that line to start walking away.....
So headed back by Wellsville - lots of tink-tink bites, and hooked up probably a dozen, only managing to land one (again). Pooh!!! I had a nice one too - got a good look at him, as he arched - and released.... But - tugs is tugs.
Again - forgot the camera this morn. Next time.
Lets get chillin!
