Wife just gave me a new Pflueger President 6730 spinning reel to do something other than fly fishing.
Have no rod, so need advice.
Likely small lake pan fishing with some AuSable River fishing for Brown trout and occasional walleye. Maybe bass fishing infrequently.
I'm new to this but from my limited research it would seem I should be in the Light to Medium-Light weight, fast action rod arena.
Suggestions please for limited budget. Thanks!!

I have the perfect solution for you. I have the exact same reel (awesome reel by the way) and I matched it up with an outstanding rod for a great price. I'm a big believer in the Fenwick HMX IM7 Medium Light 2 piece rod. It would be perfect for your application! I have a 6'6" that I sometimes wish was a 7' but thats for big trout rivers - all in all it's a stellar pole with great sensitivity and a nice fast action - I only paid $60 for it at Sportsmans Warehouse. You'll love it and it balances VERY well with the 6730 reel. Let me know what you end up doing!

I have a fenwick rod, "not the same modle as your" I will say this about it, I have had it for 30 years, It belonged to gramps first then my dad then on to me, and it have gone though two reels so far and am on a third.
it has held up great, the rapping is fenominal, and it has some body to it, I have landed walleye, steel head, atlantic kings, pike and 30+ pound carp and it is still going strong.
I'd say I got my money's worth out of it, but I didnt spend a penny on it. [:p]
they do tend to be mid range price wise, and quality wise, so for the money, Fenwick is a good product... "never buy the cheepest or the most expencive" The cheepest will wear out and break on ya, and you will never get your money's worth out of the most expencive. [cool] unless you fish only once or twice a year or you fish every single day.

It took everything in my power to not bring home one of the new Shimano Volteus rods from Bass Pro yesterday. I prefer a graphite rod but I admit I will be trying one of these in an ultra-light to light action rod before Spring. So while I can't comment on it for the time being, it has my interest peaked. What I can comment on is the Shimano Clarus. I'm quite content with that purchase and with as many models it's offered in, you should find one suitable for your needs.

I agree as the Clarus is the only rod I buy now. Great warrenty.

Thanks to all who shared.
I just today did buy the Fenwick HMX 7' Medium.
I'll use it as described and then if I need higher test (which the rod will take), I'll pick up a heavier reel.
Love the way this rod feels and casts with 6# and 8# Trilene XL. [cool]
