My son and I fished Ashton this afternoon and in all honesty I would avoid it due to safety and low catch rates. First of all many of you may already know this, but they are fast at work building the tunnel to drain Ashton in July to repair the dam. Access at the dam will be difficult, there is a parking lot just past the traditional pull in past the dam. The construction workers told me I could park within these vehicles; they were very polite. Once on the res. it is apparent the traditional fishing areas by the dam were wide open with water. Thought I would walk to a point to fish, discovered very thin ice at one inch. The most interesting observation was near the shore there was four inches of safe ice, as soon as you get 30 + feet from the shore the ice got very thin. So with this observation we fished 10-20 feet from shore in an average of 13 feet of water. We only iced five in our 2.5 hours there all small; 4 bows and 1 brown. I do not recommend Ashton until a good deep freeze; someone could really find themselves in trouble here. If you go please use test holes.
