Started at Fish Creek on 12-30 just a little after sun up. Got slush foot on the way out as the edges were very slushy and the snow was up past my knees. We had move over to an area with a steeper bank near the inlet to get on the ice (forgot my plank). 3 guys, fished near the inlet for about 3 hours. We iced 5 brookies and 1 bow. Smallest was a brookie around 8 inches, caught 1 brook that was about 15 inches. Rainbow was just over 16. We caught our fish on worms on any type of jig. Didn't seem to make much difference what color.
Moved on to Mackay and started there around 1 PM. There were lots of fish there, but it was difficult to get them to bite. Finally got that figured out and we all limited on Kokes around 11 inches long. The ticket was a small pink and white jig. Fish were near the bottom but would easily follow the bait up until you could see them. We could see that they were biting very softly and then spitting it right back out. Being able to see the fish helped a lot. Went to my brothers for the night and took care of the fish. We went back to Mackay just a little after sun up. There were 5 of us now. There were still plenty of fish, but had a hard time getting them to bite at all. Left there about 10:30 skunked.
Arrived at Magic around 12:30. Some wonderful person plowed the road almost all the way to the water down by the dam making it a short walk. Watched another fisherman get slush foot as we were getting ready to walk out, so we went to an area with a steeper bank and avoided that. [
] Caught 1 fish right off, then it was very hit and miss. 2 or 3 bites in just a few minutes, then nothing for 20-30 minutes. The fish were cruising at 6-10 feet and were biting hard. Pink jigs tipped with worms seemed to be the best. Iced 8 fish in about 3.5 hours. Smallest ones were around 12 inches. Biggest was almost 16. I know there are big ones in there, but we didn't get any that day.
Ice everywhere we went (all 3 lakes) was about 8-10 inches.
