Well my second visit to Carey was nothing like I exspected. I figured we be into the perch all day, but instead we had to wait until the school would show up on the screen and then I could see the nibbles but none would get themselves the new "lip ring" I was offering them.
It was a beautifull day, no wind -1 deg. and sunny. Great fishin but no catchin all the fault of the opperator.

Thanks for the report Michael! I was wondering how the perching was over there!

Wish they would have just stayed still and cooperated a little better.

How small of jigs did you try? Sometimes I go to a beadhead fly when they are really picky like a prince nymph or a pheasant tail.

I unfortunately did not have any of those with me and they love them in the rest of the year!

How deep was the water. I think I know the spot you were at. The deeper water is closer to the bank. Ron

How was the ice? I talked to an old man there one summer after we got back to the ramp. He said he ice fishes some years and has gotten wet several times due to the hot springs currents thinning out some spots. I know where some of the warmer water is, but hate surprises on ice.

It showed 6.5 on the screen and we were about 30 yrds from the warm water in the first channel.

Well I only know of the warm spring, if there are more it would be good to know.

How thick was the ice? Ron

The ice was 5" to maybe 10" in spots, we only went up to the warm water to where it was 3-4" and then moved back to the 5" area. So were we where you thought we were?

I was flying over it 8-9 years ago in the winter. It was frozen except for the spring and one spot I'll say about 200 yards SW pretty much. Kinda right towards Carey I guess. There was no ice there and it was steaming. I looked for it in the summer but it was hard to tell then.

Since I couldn't see dirt mounds behind the willows I thought you were on the south east side. Have you tried the ponds west of the boat launch? It is the deepest ( still under 10 feet ) by the bank. In the center of the ponds the water is less than a foot deep. I am thinking about going up on Friday if everything goes good. Ron

No we stayed in the first channel to the south that goes right down to the warm springs. Scott went towards the west and I think he made it to the first wider opening but not the furthest open area to the west. I think I would start there next time and then work back towards the east. Walk the farthest first and work back to the landing.
