My son and I decided to make the 3 hour drive to Pelican today. As we drove past DC, there was still a lot of open water and plenty of steam rising above the dark waters. As mentioned in another post, there is ice by the dam up to about Sailboat Beach. Walsburg Bay is about 2/3 frozen. The water between the bank and island is frozen and of course, the north end is also frozen. As for the rest of the lake, much of the lake was starting to freeze and by the time we drove by this evening, there was very little steam coming off the lake. I'm hoping that by next week the whole lake will be capped. I have my favorite spots and they are mostly still open or partially ice over.
As for our trip to PL, is was cold. -2 degrees to be exact. We fished for about 5 hours and caught fish non-stop. We started out by parking at the sportsman access on the north side and drove the sled and tent over to the other side. We started out by the boat launch and fished for about an hour. We caught a dozen or so fish and then we decided to move a couple hundred yards to the east and just south of the open water (about 500 or so mallards were hanging out in the open water). The fishing was non-stop. We only kept blue gills over 8" and we caught one largemouth (14" 1.5lbs.).
In all, we caught about 60 fish. The flavors of the day were white Genz Worms, Genz Bugs, and Orange Gizzy Bugs. We played around with tipping with worms and meal worms and neither seemed to work better than another. Presentation and color was the bigger factors.
It was certainly cold. The tent made it very nice. We wore just our sweatshirts. The ice thin and slushy in a couple of areas, so if you are heading out, please be advised.
