Was fishing Glenndale today when a group of people got on the ice with a small dog and a large one. There is still open water just east of the dam. I told my son n law that we would probably get to see a dog in the water for sure and maybe someone swimming after it, about ten minutes later the dog fell through the ice and sure enough one of the people went to the rescue. He was very lucky that he didn't go in also. He threw a jacket out to the dog and it was able to get enough traction to get out.
After that common sense says tie the dog up or put it back in the truck, nope the dog continued to run, but at least it was a lot smarter than the people it came with, because it didn't get back in the water.
Please keep the dogs at home or at least on a leash.
I took my daughter and her husband fishing and wanted them to catch a few fish and the planters there did cooperate. It wasn't nonstop but it was fun for them. Sorry it was to cold to think about pictures.

I don't have a problem with people taking their dogs on ice as long as they are on a leash or really obedient.

This is a very good post and your observations today are ones to think about. I fully agree that hyper dogs have no place on the ice. I do agree with Windriver if a dog is obdient and follows commands I have no problem seeing them out there. I am glad you got into the fish as well.

Was at SFCR and watched a beagle take after 12 or so deer. No chance he could of caught them but the nerve of the group he was with to, laugh it off.

that is to typical of people I to hate it when dogs are running amuc freely and bothering other people... My brother was fishing at causey in utah and some guy with a bunch of dogs was out on the ice not even fishing just had his dogs out there.. And one of the dogs went over to my brothers hole and started barking at him... And the owner kept calling the dog but it didn't listen just continued to bark it's head off... Dumb dogs...

I would have shot the dog chasing deer. Ron

man people have been testy lately. i am a dog lover and my dogs are trained. the only way they will growl is if you get too close. great way of keeping people from casting over me i might add ! yes i agree unruly dogs are a problem but so are KIDS that are unruly! hyper, screaming, running past you knocking over your gear, asking you questions every thirty seconds throwing rocks in the water ect. i think some of them should be kept on a leash !! my thoughts on courtesy are if i am fishing where people allready are i am quiet and reserved, and well mannered. if i am fishing a place and am the first one there and my compadrays are drinking beer and passing a bottle getting rowdy and swiss family robinson comes down and sets up 30 feet from us they either have to put up with it or leave ! in my opinion people who live in glass houses shouldn't cast stones and mind there own buisiness. and ron's " i would shoot the dog " down right bizzare...my 2 cents what about fish and game helicopters doing there " counting " they run the legs off of them..........

First of all I think this is a good topic to discuss because it should lead to us all being more conscious of other people on the ice or water.

Secondly kids can be as annoying as untrained dogs. However, I personally have never had a bad encounter with kids other than my own. [laugh] My kids have stepped on rods, broken lines, tangled lines, stuck hooks in themselves, stuck hooks in me, kicked dirt in reels, thrown rocks in my favorite holes etc..., but I use those situations as learning experiences and to my knowledge they have never harassed anyone else.

We can all make life more enjoyable if we would just keep our cool when an ill behaved dog or child approaches us. In my experience most dog owners come take care of the problem. There are some who just yell at their dogs all day from across the ice, but for the most part the situation is handled quickly and apologies are offered.

Another thing I think people forget is how well sound travels over a frozen lake. Nothing like taking some kids fishing and have them get a lesson in cursing. But for the most part I think ice fishermen are some of the friendliest fishermen out there, much better than those snobby fly fishermen LOL [Tongue]

I totaly agree with the kid part as well they can be quite anoying but so can the adult who is with them some people need to just learn manners and learn to be polite I use to have a dog I took with me fishing all the time she was my best fishing buddy ever luckly she listend very well though she was good at keeping other unwanted animals away and such but was a good tail wagging dog for the most part I don't hate that people have dogs with them I just hate when they are uncontroled and un ruley out there... But like said already not just the dogs it's the kids as well and also some adults.. I think some people need to take a manners class and learn to be polite to others it sure does pay off to be nice some times.. I've never met any of you fine folk out on the water I'm sure I will eventually though it's only a matter of time.. And I really can't wait to eather excpesialy some of you guys I would like to learn a few things from on the fly fishing I have picked it up but havnt got it down... Any way it's not the dog it's the owner.... It's not the kids it's the owner [laugh]

If your kids are out there and I'm catching fish they can use every one of my rods! They are the future of fishing and if we don't get them involved we will lose it all![fishin]

If you dog comes over, I carry milkvbones in my bag. [Image: happy.gif]
I'd rather them eat the milk bones then my bait! [Image: bobwink.gif]

Seeing how you copied and pasted this answer[laugh] My answer back...some kids just don't want to fish, but they are forced to come. I am betting these are the trouble makers.

And as far as dog, like I said on the other, I prefer NO ONE gives my dog anything to eat...in this day and age, you just don't know what that is. Just like don't give someone else's children candy.

I would be happy to help ANYONE that is "Interested" in the basics of Fly Fishing a lesson on a pond, but the key word here is INTERESTED.

I would like a lesson on all this midge stuff.....you seem awesome at it. I've been fly fishing for year, but I would like to know more about lake fishing.

Yup, kids require patience and other outlets as they have a shorter attention span. The rewards of teaching are pretty great however. As for dogs, I've never fed a dog on a leash but if the choice is the dog eats my meal worms on the ice or a milk bone, it gets the milk bone.If someone doesn't want their dog fed, and I can understand that, don't let it wander around eating everything in sight while being unattended. I"m just saying! (I'm sure FG, your dog isn't out loose while we are ice fishing. It's a bait thing.) [Image: bobwink.gif]

EXACTLY MM. My dog is never off a leash in a public place, and I think this is a good rule of thumb.
The friendliest of dogs is unwelcome when it comes to gear, not to mention the HOOKS.
Some one that lets their dog rummage threw your gear to the point you have to give it a milk bone to correct the problem is totally unacceptable to me.

With that said, a talking to the owner is about the best anyone can do unfortunately.

Once on the river, I was seated tying a fly on when a gentleman approached with his lab. The lab ran over to me and the owner said, it's okay, he is friendly. I said quite firmly.."STOP!" in which the dig did and turn to go the other direction, but dragging my expensive rod and reel with him as his paw got caught in my line.
The owner stopped his dog, unwrapped the line, dropped it to the ground and said..."sorry". WHAT?! I made him stand there while I checked my line, rod and reel, not to mention...pulled the hook out of my finger that caught inserted when the dog hi-jacked my gear.
So, one word from this dog lover....PUT A LEASH ON THEM!!!!!

I have seen a sweet heart of a dog, go postal for some unseen reason...NO ONE knows what their dog is going to do all the time.

I as well would like to learn how to flick a fly!!!! I got a setup and have only used it a few times as I've gotten so darn frustraited to the point of actually swinging the rod at the nearest fence pole and broke it..... Due to snaging my darn eye lid... So I've done replaced the rod.. But I would really like to learn the way of the mclains......

I was trolling Ririe last spring and when I got back to the dock, there were 2 couples in their mid twenties or so fishing off the dock. They had a pitbull tied to the aluminum ramp handles that spans the gap right at the start of the dock (if you could picture that).

Anyways, I had two nephews with me (10 and 11) so I told them to stay in the boat and under no circumstances go near the dog. As I walked up the dock I asked the kid to move his dog, he said "oh she's harmless". As I got closer the dog snarled at me and made a move towards me. Now keep in mind, I either have to walk in the water around the dog or walk right past it on the 2 ft wide ramp. I calmly drew my XDM on the pup and asked the kid "am I going to have to shoot your dog or are you going to put her in your car? He politely removed her from the dock.

I know this is dramatic but I was a little hypersensitive after reading about all the pitbull attacks prior to the trip, and the fact that I had two little kids with me increased my agitation.

That being said, I love friendly dogs on the ice and I don't mind whatsoever if a friendly dog stops by and visits, not one bit.

edited: PS, not only this drama but they were parked on the good side of the ramp right at the water.
