I will let you all know.. I figured I need to go to the river as I havnt fished it in a little while now.... If I catch what I'm excpecting to catch I will post pictures.. So check back in tomorow after 4pm an I should have an update.. By the way I'm going to be using a cut'r bug and a maniac minnow only..

So how is the ice on the river near Lava? The slower sections near Pocatello are mostly iced over. I have been waiting for a break in the cold to head up above Lava and see if I could find some open water.

Thanks!

well I'm back already!!! It was one cold S.O.B out there thismorning.. Any way water is open. I'm almost all spots on the river from mccammon upstream don't know about further down from mccammon as I didn't go there.. I only fished one spot for about an hour and in that hour I hooked into one fish guesing a brown as I've never caught anything else from this particular spot.. And it broke me off after about 3 min of fighting it.. It was hooked on a barbless so don't worry [angelic] and I was using 6 pound test... Mono.. With a black leech cut'r bug I was slowly bouncing it across the bottom I mean super slow to as the fish I scene in there just looked super un excited to be in that cold cold river.. I'm sure if the water where I was, were to be slow enoug it would have been froze.. So the fish were moving super slow. And didn't seem very interested in much. I just happen to cross the ones path and got him excited to bite and once he bit the fight was on to bad I couldn't get it in kinda disapointed felt like a real nice one.. And for those that want to fish upper portneuf above lava the sportsman access are not plowed out so it will take a serious 4wd or snowmachine to get right up to the river other than that it's walking in from the main road. Which isn't a bad walk for those that know the area.. The river is still super high as well above lava I think there is a beaver dam some where in the system. Need to go find it and tear it out.. Probly will come spring if any one wants to help me find it then rip it out.. Any way that's the portneuf report. I plan on going again some time soon..

Thanks for the information on the river conditions. I understand about the cold, it was -3 at my house this morning, and I seriously doubt if it was much warmer anywhere else.

If they aren't opening any of the accesses on the upper river, is there room to park off the road?

What harm will the beaver dam do? Do the land owners want it gone? I have caught some big fish out of dam ponds. Just curious.

a beaver pond has just that as a plus bigger fish seem to congragate around them.. But the one that is there now is so backed up it is eating away at the bank causing it to colaps and fall into the river..it is really really high it has ben getting higher every week for the past couple months since august it has ben backing up... And they are open no gates to close them just not plowed out... There are some tracks from the railroad workers but they only go in about 10 yards or so... And there is room to park as long as there isn't alot of people trying to park at once..

Unless you are affiliated with Fish and Game or are the land owner, don't be a jerk and mess with the ecosystem out there. Beaver dams can stimulate growth throughout the area in ways that few can even detect. Nature isn't just there to be at your pleasure but to be at everyone's- nature watchers, fishermen, and wildlife alike.

no comment!!!!!! I was told if I have nothing nice to say then say nothing at all so I'll just not say anything to this negative response...

If you rip out a beaver dam and leave the beavers, all you have done is given them the pleasure of rebuilding their dam. They enjoy the work and will rebuild every night after you spend every day ripping it out. Have fun.

wait till Feb and march. Afternoons will be good on the portnuef.let it warm up a bit. Same with black canyon and bear below onida right now you'll spend more time cleaning ice from your guides.

for the 12 years I have been fishing the portneuf this time of the year always produces the best... But of course I have lived within spiting distance of it for a little over 22 years now... And I've scene alot of changes on the river in my life some good some bad... But in all my experience december and january produce the biggest and nicest fish the river has to offer..every year I catch a trophy sized brown from there.. But I confidently will say I know that river better than most from where it starts to inkom any way... As after inkom the river is kina a mess I don't like to fish it through that area.. Inkom to fort hall then after fort hall it turns nice again....

Looking at the weather, I am thinking it is going to be Feb or Mar before it warms and clears enough that I even WANT to get out in the water.

I had been hoping that it would give us a break and warm a bit before too long, but I really don't want a broken rod tip or to have to clear guides constantly, so I will try and be patient. Plus I want to make sure the road over the top is open, as I don't get excited about the extra mileage of going around to get over there.

It will be nice to fish some rivers and streams before the runoff though. This is the first year that I have had much of a chance to do this, so I think I am too excited.

Oh well, the skiing is nice right now!!!

I flyfish and flyrod guides are smaller than spinning rods and they build up ice. So the colder it is the quicker the guides freeze up it's a pain in the a--. Also its nicer to make a day of it fishing and not cleaning guides. Where marshcreek dumps in is when it turns to cow pasture chocolate milk poky it turns to tires couches etc. over by simplot there was a fridge in it. I'll hit the provo river in utah in dec and jan while visiting family and friends but i spend more time cleaning guides then fishing

ANd because of that ice, allot of broken rod tips.
If I have to deice after every third cast I go home. Ed, broke his Elkhorn because of ice in the tip top.

Jeremy, that stretch and your knowledge sound like a perfect "I show you, you show me" session for me to help you with fly fishing, and you to teach me the river. What do you think? Of course we will need a little warmer as previously mentioned...LOL

you know exactly what I mean then about from inkom to fort hall is just no good .. There are plenty of fish in that area but they are living in gross water.... To bad people are so darn careless and don't realize what there doing... imy dad grew up in poky and he told me that that whole stretch use to be a great fishing area befor people started to dump there waste and garbage in there all over... And it is really to bad I wonder what kind of an efort would need to be made to try and clean it up and try to restor the health of the river through there.... There are some spots along the river in the pocatello area that are nice just the river is so darn dirty and filled full of grotesc things...y personal opinion is they should try and get as much garbage as possible out of the river through the poky stretch and then start dumping lava rock here and there to help filter the water so it will clear back up... Because here from mccammon upstream is super clear for the most part.. But there is more structre that helps filter the water and clean it up like rocks and lots of little falls all over...

sounds like a deal!!!!!! I guess I could give up one of my prized spots.... When the time comes... I was actually thinking of going and getting some practice in today I was out in my yard earlier trying to get the motion down but it was super cold out at 7am..

The best start would be to fence off and replant willows to stabilize the banks of Marsh Creek. The majority of chemical and soil pollutants of the lower Portneuf come from Marsh Creek. Until it is restored the lower Portneuf will have problems. With vegetation and maybe some rock, to filter some of Marsh Creek things might begin to improve.

in poky they have a cleanup day i think its only once a year and they pull out all kinds of goodies If you call the city they might know when where and who does it.

Ed breaks or looses everything

I would like to do that. Why not. I would like to do the studies at Yellowstone too.
