FRANKFORT, Ky. - From stream to stove, gar take on an unfamiliar role as the main course on "Kentucky Afield" television this weekend, August 28 and 29.

Longnose gar may not be the first fish you put on the dinner table, but not because of lack of flavor. This rough fish, while it is labor-intensive to clean, is rather delicious. Fresh from a fishing trip on Kentucky River, our host, Tim Farmer, joins colleague Rick Hill in the kitchen where the prize is in the prep.

Also on the show, hunting season means trophy season, so we seek pre-season advice from an expert taxidermist. Jessamine County's Harry Whitehead says head-turning taxidermy actually begins at harvest. Get tips on caring for deer, waterfowl and other game in the field to better assure "real" appeal in the finished mount.
