We went to Hyrum Dam yesterday and headed out on the four-wheeler in the rain. We set up shop and started catching a few little rainbows. The little bows were steady through the day. We did manage to get perch, browns, and large mouth on the ice. The big brown was the catch of the day.[cool]

We were using small jigs with tubes as well as Cutter bugs and Gizzy bugs. We tipped with Power Bait, waxies, Mealies, and worms. We caught fish on all presentations. We fished from 15-30 feet of water and all bites were on the bottom. The perch were not huge but better than last year. The brown was 21 long and thick. The few bass caught were all dinks around 7 inches.

The ice was a solid 8 inches with about 2 inches of crust on top. There was some slush forming with the rain but we had not problems driving a wheeler out there. Sorry but I can’t say were on the lake we were because it was my buddies spot. [Wink]

Nice fish you got there. That is a nice brown. No need to apologize for not saying where you were. If people will just move around out there when they aren't getting bites, they will find the fish. I was out there this morning in my "normal" spot and didn't get a bite. We moved to a spot where we hadn't fished before, and between the whole group, landed over 100 fish. So the fish are there. I just hope someday I get the opportunity to land a fish like that one. [Smile]

Hey Awesome post and awesome fish. Is it just me or are a lot of Browns being caught this year out of Hyrum this year. I have lived in Cache Valley for a number of years, and have heard very few reports of Browns coming out of here. Just curious and wondering if anyone else has noticed, and why so many are being caught this winter?

I definitely need to fish this lake more!

Hyrum has always had a good population of browns in it, but you usually won't catch them until this time of year through the ice. The waters that run into Hyrum are full of browns just like the ones that Hyrum feeds. Best part is they are usually toads!

Cool, thanks for the information. I think Brown trout are amazing fish and wish more placed had them. 15 years ago you could catch some nice Browns in the Narrows, but that was a long time ago, and they were som pigs as well. I would love to catch some of the ones out of Hyrum.

That was a pretty fun day, it was good to get out on the ice with you guys again. I just hope all the ice won't melt away to soon with this crazy warm spell.

Well, I guess if the ice melts we will just have to catch bass dangit!

Looks like someone did catch a bass!
And indeed - a nice brown. I think I wrassled with a couple of those. They do put up more of a fight than some of the planter-bows. Though I will say - all them trout sure do get wild and floppy as soon as they get out of the hole.

Seen lots of chunky browns up Black Smith Fork - along the river. There's some beasts up at the Pig too.

Nice post - good info - great pix. Thanks

And what - no Princess Pole this time?

I gotta go see the glass ice that it's turned into. Hope the edges don't soften up. Haven't tried tipping with powerbait. My son found pockets of powerbait in the ice and was determined to get them out with the auger. They sure glowed in there, but there's nothing to "get" I tried to explain.
Ah - kept him busy. So did the perch. Did you find any of those?
A few perch, nothing to get excited about though
