Don told me they were into some good biting crappie and I made plans to fish this AM with them.
Rods, check.
Tackle-box, check.
New jigs, check.
Gloves, check.
Warm Hat, check.
Extra warm clothes, check-they are already in the truck.
Ok, so I am on the road at 6:45 with the hammer down, I pull off the interstate and about 5 mins before I meet up I realize, my extra-warm clothes ARE indeed in my truck....except I am driving my OTHER truck. emoBang emoBang emoBang emoBang emoBang
What to do? I choose to brave it out. I had an exra button-down shirt and my jeans I was going to change into later to head to work, and I also had my Browning wind-breaker. It would have to do. Luckilly we never ran very far or fast or I would have frozen to death I tell ya. It was 43 when I left home, when we got off the water at noon, it was 39*
Don and his buddy Chuck had been finding fish relating to a creek channel about 1/4 mile off the main river. We sat in 15-19 FOW casting to a grass ledge in about 3 FOW. Slow retrieve back to the boat and most casts you would either hook up or at least get a hit from voracious blue-gill. Water temps were 45*-42* We only fished from about 9-12 and in the middle the fish stopped biting so we checked further back in the creek without a single bite. Came back to the hot spot and found them again for the last 45 mins.
Ended with about 40 keepers, several going over 13", about 15 throwbacks, at LEAST 40 blue-gill, most were keepers in anybody's book, 6 shell crackers, several yella bass, and 5 LM bass, three of which kept. An outstanding, cold trip for three hours.
Fish would ony hit: plastic lures on jig heads.......kidding, but seriously, we threw 6-8 colors, with and without tail lights, 1/32 and1/16th oz, and every one of them caught fish. I really need to do this again!
