[cool] Hey everyone, I am looking for some of your favorite methods for catching smallies. My son and I have become addicted to catching and lots of releasing of smallies but sometimes you get the finicky one that one take even the best presentation that you have to offer. I would appreciate and comments and suggestions that you can offer. Thank You.[sly]

[cool] Hey aquaman, Thanks for the insight. I used to live in Utah. There was always good fishing just about anywhere there. Some of the things I miss the most is beating up on Blue Gills at Pelican Lake and the awesome cut throats out of the Provo river. Not to mention the good Crappie and Cat fishing at Willard. Have a good one and thanks for the info.

[cool] HEY THERE ONE WHO FISHES, THANKS FOR THE WRITEBACK. I WENT TO THAT POST AND WAS JUST WONDERING IF ANYONE HAD SOME OTHER TRICKS UP THEIR SLEEVE FOR SO CAL AND MAYBE ALSO SOME AREAS THAT ARE DECENT. I USUALLY GO TO BISHOP CA BUT THAT IS QUITE A DRIVE FROM WHERE I AM.

Big Bear lake would be the closest lake I know of that has small Mouths. I would love to find a place local to catch small mouths. They are one of my favorite species to catch. I have personally never been up to bishop to catch them I usually drive out to Arizona.

[font "Arial Narrow"][size 4]Have you had any luck in the lakes around San Bernardino. ie Lake Gregory, Silverwood Lake etc? Bishop is a good haul for me too.[/size][/font]

Just learned a trick that one person uses. If he's fishing in a lake and catches a small sunfish, he won't even touch it. Instead, he'll leave it on the hook and toss the line back in. Eventually, a smallmouth bass will see the struggling fish and whammo!!! He's got himself a nice size smallie.

There are a few guys I heard mention that out here in Cali. Gotta be carfull though it is not legal in all states.

[cool] Hey guys thanks for the input. My son is already excited to tryout some of those techniques. And hey Dryrod, I haven't hit those lakes yet but I will soon. Have a goood one .

It's illegal here in MN but they still do it. What they are doing, to make it seem like they aren't breaking the law is not even moving the hook when they realize they have a small fry. They just toss it back in and hope for the best. That way, if questioned about it, they can say they didn't realize it was on there since the hook is still in the mouth where it was originally hooked.

IT'S LEGAL HERE IN MICHIGAN . YOU CAN CATCH A LEGAL FISH AND USE IT FOR BAIT .

Here in MO, you can use non-game fish under 5 inches for bait, either whole or cut up. And you can use the innards of any fish, of course. Of those two, I've had better luck with the innards rather than whole fish when it comes to smallies.

we can use the whole fis , we can use parts of the fish , but what we can't do is clean a fish and leave the disguarded parts in the water .

why ? i don'i know , seems like they would end up there naturally anyway . i guess it's because of all the swimmers so i can't blame them for that law .

[unsure] Ya know, I'm not sure what the law is regarding the discarding of fish parts along the water in MO. No warden ever told us what not to do with our cutbait when they came around. Generally, we'd use just about everything regardless. If we were on a shoreline near woods, we'd toss the leftovers into the trees. If there weren't trees near, we threw them in the water. Something is going to eat them and get use of 'em.

Hi there OneWhoFishes,

Big Bear has two types of Smallmouths. The regular Smallmouths and then there's the small, slow growning Northern Black Bass.. heck they not only have small mouths but they act like smallies and just sit on top of the gravel beds or rock ledges sometime not 1 foot away from the water line. I've fished for and caught the smaller northerns consistantly not more than 3 feet out from the water line. Hope I'm not giving away any of your secrets. ha ha

Smallies are still funner!

[cool] Hey JR, I've found that smallies have an attitude sometimes and can be really finicky at others.

[cool] Hey makeslures, thanks for the input there. I am planing a full rainbow of arsenal. The only thing is that I have to drive quite a distance to get to smallies here. But the next trip I will be ready.
