Full Version: Mid-Day Memory at the Rock

I took my 4 year old to Rockport today for one hour of mid-day fishing. I debated making the trip because we would only have one hour to fish, but he was persistent. This was his first time to go with me on the ice, so I thought if nothing else I would see how he would do just sitting there for an hour. I think he just punched his ticket for future outings.

I have been wanting to try the west side of the lake, but due to only having one hour we went by the boat ramp. I figured this would be faster and easier for him to get on the ice and leave us more time to actually fish. We got there just before noon and went straight out from the ramp to a depth of 25 feet. I set him up with my light action pole that I usually use for perch fishing. If he got a bite I wanted him to be able to really feel it. I tipped it with a small orange ice fly and a meal worm. I showed him how to jig a little bit and he proved to be a quick learner. 15 minutes later he hooked a fish suspended at about 13 feet. In his excitement he was reeling backwards and I didn't notice until he had unscrewed the handle off the reel. I quickly screwed it back on, showed him which way to reel it, and watched him land his first fish on the ice. Talk about an excited little boy. Some days, most days, parenthood can be so rewarding.

There was about 2 inches of snow on top of the ice with minimal slush. The sun was out, the sky was blue, a perfect day to bond with my son.

Don't blink, time goes by faster than you think!

My four year old son now is a senior at the U of U and he's taller than I am. Treasure those outings, your son will! Great photos.

Here's my kid now, he was four about three weeks ago!

Looks like your son turned out pretty good. He likes to fish, and he goes to the U.

I know what you mean about time passing quickly. My oldest is almost 14 now. Seems like he was just 4 himself.

Happy Fishing!

Great times to remember. Here's mine of my grandson. He was hit by a car and killed about a year after this "memory." The memories were for him. Now they are for me.

Treasure the times spent with kids.

Sorry to hear about your grandson. That looks like a great memory. Glad you took the time to make it.

Yeah, one look at that face and I'd say you have a fishing buddy for life. Mine are 20 and 25, both in college. Neither one have much time for the old man at the moment. I got a chance to fish with a buddy's grandkids last week. Got about the same results as you did. What a great day!

Boatload...Sorry for your loss man. I thought when my kids were grown I'd quit worrying about them. Wrong. I'm constantly reminded of how fortunate we are with our families. None of us are guaranteed tomorrow. I look forward to my kids homecommings so we get a chance to spend some time on the water or on the mountain. Make every chance count!

That made me laugh! Winding the reel backwards! My kids do that a couple times a year. They get so excited about fish they loose their minds. I fish with my kids about 98% of the time now. When I go with out them I almost dont no what to do, No rat nests in the line to untangle! No one asking strange questions! And most of all no one telling me how to fish and what i am doing wrong, when they are catching fish and i am not.

[cool]That is awesome! Talk about a priceless memory... I have a four year old boy as well and a six yr old girl. They've only been ice-panfishing at Utah Lake with me twice so far, but next month I'm going to take them to the Rock for some troutski action. Can't wait for that experience to see them with a fiesty mean 15 inch bow in the other end of the line...

Good on ya man. I've got two daughters, one 41 & the other 37. My memories of the times we spent fishing together are as precious as anything to me. By now you realize I've got some miles on me so let an old guy share this thought with you. DON'T PASS UP ANY OPPORTUNITY TO SHARE WITH YOUR YOUNG'UNS. If you do, you can NEVER go back & get it.
