so im originally from the midwest and do not take advantage of much of the trout fishing out here in utah, most of the time im after the perch at pineview. however, me and some friends have decided to make the couple hour drive most likely this coming thursday just to try and have fun hooking into some bigger fish.

does anyone have any tips they wouldnt mind sharing? i mean i dont even know what to use for bait, i never fish trout let alone through the ice. im well equipped to go other than some tackle, have a shack, heater, and sonar so i should be able to stay for most of the day and hopefully find some fish!

i do plan on scrolling through the forum history looking at older reports, but any advice on where i should maybe get started or what bait i should be using would be greatly appreciated. oh and also what lb test line do you guys use out there? i normally use 4lb fireline, was thinking about using 8lb for strawberry?

thanks!

now i just have to hope for cold weather so the ice stays safe.

I haven't been up this season(may go up today) but all years past my best lure would be a 1 1/2" white( pink and blue work to) radical glow tube jig tipped with a meal or earth worm, some use chub meat. i've also caught them on swedish pimples, ratfinkies, flatfish(fire tiger color).
As far as line goes I use 10# braided (over kill)for my main and change my leader for the location. Strawberry I'll start with 4# and if they start breaking it I move to 6#. The lighter the leader the better in my opinion and the reason i go with braided main line is for the toughness against the ice. The major downfall is it will freeze really fast if your not in a tent and its below freezing.

remember to always get away from the crowds, I say at least 100yds from any big groups and fond a point or other structure. Sportsmans has Topo maps that show the contour lines on the lake bottom that is very helpful. sorry i don't remember who makes the maps but they are white with blue writing and laminate.

hope this helps, there are far better experts on here that will chime in.
