Not sure why my favoirite but must say that elusive Muskie. Trout up the ying yang all around me but something about the Muskie. I also love the perch.
Perhaps it is the fact they are not readily caught where I do most of my fishing?
Catching and cooking a mess of perch doesn't seem to be as much of a detriment to the population as it is with a few trout.
I know there are put and take waters but catching those fresh hatchery rainbows doesn't really do it for the excitement as does a bunch of perch.

In that case, to eat would be Trout, Steelhead and Salmon. To C & R or the sporting choice, having never had the chance to fish for Steelies or Salmon (YET) I would say my favorite to catch is Carp.

Carp on the fly is my favorite to catch, but steelhead and salmon are close behind.
As for eating, steelhead, salmon, perch, and good healthy trout.

For pursuit and (temporary) take, steelhead hands down.
For dinner, I'd have to go with crappie and/or clean river smallmouth.

Can I just have them all?
I grew up eating and catching fish as my dad was a commercial fisherman, so how can I choose just one???
For just plain eating, I prefer panfish, catfish, and fresh salmon. Brookies come in next, then the wild trout etc.
For catching and mostly releasing - anything! I really like trying different and new (to me) places. Looking for places to go is what keeps me out of a padded cell in the winter. [crazy] But I really love exploring for wild fish in small streams and high lakes, and--- the scenery isn't too bad either! [cool]

Ron, you are the only one I know that manages to catch catfish in Idaho consistently!
Though I love to eat catfish, I had to vote for the fish I catch the most often.

I'm with flygoddess on this. Kind of unusual, huh? Just kidding, we have had our differences in opinions, but after all they are opinions and we are both up front. []
Anyway, my selection is entirely different between eating and catching. ?????????????

I like catching lots of different fish. However I target brown trout because I have figured them out. And find them to be the hardest fighting trout I've ever hooked into... My fav bass are lmb because they remind me of brown trout on there feeding habits they will just flat hamer on a top water.. And take a mid depth just as well.. Out of the pan fish it's a toss up for pumpkinseeds and perch perch will nail the lure or jig hard and fight tell the end.. And same with the pumpkinseeds.. So I don't know.. Now I've only caught mud and channel cats but I sure do like channels they are super good to eat.. Honestly not the hardest fighting fish but there fun.. Out of the trash fish carp for sure they are by far the hardest fighting fish I've ever hooked into for just strait out line ripping brute force carp are it.. But I like catching all sorts of fish... And I'm sure I will catch fsh to change my view.. But tell then this is my view..
