Had a pretty good weekend up to Hyrum dam. Good ice - great surface. Enuf snow and skuff to get a grip, yet smooth enuf the sled wanted to go on it's own ('specially when the wind kicked up!)
Ran into Lavaman and the Friends on Sat. Had a few perch nibbles, and a number of trout attacks. Had some new jigs to dangle, and they did their work. Lost a couple to the demons of the deep (dangit!). Only hooked up the camera cable one time. And of course - he HAD to be the best trout of the day! Had to bail before noon sat, but had a pretty busy effort keeping the waxworms on the hook!
Sunday was quieter. Ventured right up to the inlet, then along the south side. Tried shallow, not so good. Deeper, a bit better. Never did find the 'school' of perch, but various stragglers roaming around. Had my 3 trout early, then held off, waiting for the big brown (that never came). Did venture Waaay south, and dropped a hole by a submerged tree. While I pulled the tent into position - found I had a trout on the line. Woops!
Saturday the wind kicked up mid-morn, and ripped for a while. Sunday it wasn't until later in the day, but I think it blew everyone off the lake, cuz I was the last one there at about 4pm. Shoulda left a couple hours earlier when the bite dropped off.
Hit deep mid-lake water, and found the schools on camera. Lots o' dinkers, just NOTHING for biters. Probably another hour the evening snack would set in.
Found a fresh glow, fresh bait, and tincy wincy hooks were hitting. They couldn't miss the small jig. Even has a diamond to sparkle in the head (and a hook tuff enuf not to break!). Missed out on Sat's plunge fest (timing) but looks like folks were gathering pretty good.
I'll say - the ice sure was singing Sunday - after about 10am, as the sun got on the rise. Crackles, pops, and chunks. To the point when you FEEL the line flex under your tent.
Spookey - exciting times! Ice was aglow as the sun hit on it. Had to turn off the camera light to get past the turbulence.
Fun Tugs!
