For the first time, Delaware's Public Ponds, a guide to public fishing ponds in Delaware, is available online at the DNREC Division of Fish & Wildlife's website, www.fw.delaware.gov.
This publication, now in its fifth edition, gives a short summary of fish populations, vegetation coverage, facilities and special conditions at each of DNREC's 32 public fishing ponds. The information is based on the most recent surveys of the fish populations.
"The big advantage to making this publication available online is that pond summaries can be updated individually as soon as the fish populations are resurveyed," said Fisheries Biologist Catherine Martin. Division personnel generally monitor the fish populations of six or seven ponds each year. Now the fisheries data will be able to be updated as soon as it is tabulated.
"Many anglers find that the publication offers a great introduction to the ponds and find the contour maps especially valuable," Martin added. The Division plans to update the contour maps of all of the ponds during 2009 and 2010.
This year's guide is not available in a printed format, but it can be downloaded and printed from the website.
