Rockport, Maine -- Fly Rod & Reel magazine has named Pantagonia founder, environmentalist, philantropist and fly-fisherman Yvon Chouinard, Angler of the Year. According to Fly Rod & Reel's Joe Healy, Chouinard epitomizes the strong ethic embodied by many fly-fishermen. "Fly-fishers tend to be stewards of our national resources, and no one has proven this to be true better than Yvon Chouinard. His dedication to helping preserve the environment through his personal giving, and through that of Patagonia, is particularly commendable," Healy said.

The choice of Chouinard, who is known as a passionate spokesperson championing conservation, is bound to be hailed by activists who share his views, while it may stir more anglers to action in this realm, too. Chouinard does not only speak about green issues, though. As founder of Patagonia, he instituted what he terms, "corporate tithing" in order to ensure that his company would set aside funds for philanthropy. He joined with Blue Ribbon Flies founder Craig Mathews to set up the 1% for the Planet organization, which now sports more than 100 generous members.
