I enjoyed a beautiful day of skiing in the sun today. Then before going home I decided to stop for an hour on the Portneuf River to see if I could catch something.

I think it was colder on the river than it was at the top of the ski hill, but I got a chance to fish a bit. I caught one nice brown, then missed another couple of hits. One was on a red zebra midge and the other was on a midge emerger. Those little buggers are almost too small for me to get them tied on!

The brown was about 14 inches and only about medium in girth. Not real skinny and not big and chunky either, but a welcome catch for winter time. I didn't get any pictures as I didn't think to throw my camera in the car along with the other ton of junk that I took today!

I was at the Crane Cr. Sportsman's Access. I went upstream from there. I think that is Hwy 30. Is the access on old 91 the old hwy that is right before the Inkom road passes under the freeway?? I would love to know some other places to get on the river!

EagleFlyFisher --- It was great to just get the fly rod out even if it was cold. I haven't been out since Nov. either.
The guides were freezing up some and I didn't stay long, but I think I hit it at just the right time. There was a bunch of midges all over the place.

If you are in the Boise area, I fished the Boise in the Chinden area last year in the first week of Feburary, also a pond or two. It was great, the weather was warm, and the river was nice. I didn't see anyone else fishing, but lots of walkers and bikers. I was envying all the southwest Idaho fishers for the mild weather there!!

yes that old 91.. There is a spot between inkom and crane crk. That is private property you the owners are right across the road in a yellowish colord house.. And they are really nice people and will gladly let you fish there land... There is a archery range in the field and a bridge to cross the river you will see from the road..

I'm jealous. I was hoping to get out yesterday as well, but the inversion down here in Cache was just too thick and it never got above freezing and the sun never really made it through the haze. I'm just not die hard enough for cleaning ice from my guides. Congrats on getting some relief from cabin fever though.

I really need to check out the Portneuf. I've been wanting to since I first saw it when going to Lava with my wife about four years ago, but just haven't made the drive up as I didn't know much about access. Sounds like you guys no where to go.

It looks like a good place to throw some streamers for larger trout. It's open and has some nice deep runs, so it would lend itself to that presentation. Maybe I'll have to make the trip this year if I can find the time.
