My buddy and I finally made it up to Daniels on Saturday. We were on the ice at 8:45 and fished until 2:00. All in all things were pretty slow but enought to keep us interested. My buddy caught 7 and I caught 5. All were 16 to 18 inchers.
We watched fish and game sabotage a group for using bait, it was quite interesting. 2 officers a child and a lady came and pitched an ice fishing tent near by, they had poles augers, just looked like normal people fishing. After about an hour the 2 officers came sprinting out of their tent and ran directly to a group by us and instructed them to leave their poles in the water. Fish and game took all of their poles (with bait on them) and wrote them a ticket. The fishermen had even baited their childrens poles with bait as well[crazy]!
Word to the wise when Fishing Daniels, if you use bait you will get caught!! I have watched Fish and game use several tactics such as this to give tickets at Daniels, although this was probably the most interesting method I have yet to see!

Awesome! Great bust.
It sounds like you did really well, especially for Daniels.

It was actually one of the slower trips I have had up there in the past several years. The fish didn't seem to be moving around as much as usual. It was also very windy which made the bites very hard to detect, but we still had a good time. It is just nice to get out.

Thanks for the report, I appreciate it.

HAHA! I wish I could have seen that. I like to see morons get busted. If only they could afford to patrol more. Still, they do better than Utah. I've had my license checked more in the past few years fishing Idaho than I have the past 16 fishing Utah. Good job IF&G, I like to hear stories like this.

a man that would have been wicked to see!!

Yeah, but at least we get our roads plowed. [laugh][laugh][laugh][laugh]
There is a slight population difference.[crazy]
All I can say is I wanna fish with you. I get asked at least twice a year here in Utah.[shocked]
I did have to show that my flies had been debarbed once while at Daniels though.

Maybe it's my beard, they think I'm a scruffy trouble maker [laugh]
Now that I think of it, most of the times I've been checked, it was at Weston which is right off a highway. Maybe that's the reason, though the guy walked all the way around the reservoir to get to me in my tube one of the times. Apparently they can go off your license plate, so I think sometimes they go off of that and don't even come bug you.
Last year the first trip I made to Idaho was on Black Canyon. I had purchased my license maybe an hour earlier, and within 10 minutes of getting on the river I was checked.
You're definitely right about their snow plowing. I thought Cache was bad, but as soon as I get into Franklin it's such a mess.

Hopefully they are running the next time we go!

how many poles did they have out. If they only had 1 for each they more than likely knew what the rules were. I've seen more F&G at daniels more than anywhere else.

Each kid had a pole and both adults had a pole. They knew no bait was allowed. They talked to us earlier in the morning and we gave them some pointers. We told them the fish bite very light with no bait. We also notified them that the fish had to be over 20 inches to keep. The
thing is they only caught one fish while using bait on 4 poles[crazy]!! I guess the fish at Daniels aren't big fans of nightcrawlers LOL!!

I'm glad they got busted. I was there around Christmas. Fishing was OK, but the guy next to us was pulling em out one after another. He started packing up to leave so we sent the kid over to see what he was using. He said Gizzy bugs, so we switched over to Gizzys. Just then another guy came over and said he was using Gizzys alright but was tipping them with shrimp. Apparently he asked the guy to reel up his pole to show him what he was catching all the fish on. Sure enough, shrimp. The guy then made a comment about going to jail and took off. I wish I would have known before he left. I would have called him in. That place is too cool to be cheating. The thing that made me mad is that we fished all day but didn't catch any over 20" and he walked away with 2 keepers... stealing from those doing it right.

What a shame! I wonder how many of those he caught and didn't keep survived? There is a reason of the no bait and barbless hook rule. It's to protect the fish. Not complying with the rules is really a selfish attitude. People like that don't seem to care about saving the fishery for anyone else. [:/]

Not to side with law breakers cause they deffinatley deserved what they got.
But I bet most/all of the fish he released survived just fine. I very rarely have a fish swallow the bait when ice fishing. Usually they are just hooked right in the front of their nose.
