Bear Lake Fishing & Conditions Report: Thursday 2/3/2011

With the bitter-cold weather, Bear Lake is now about 80% ice covered and boats cannot be launched anywhere on the lake at this time. The only open water on Bear Lake is along the east side from South Eden to North Eden. The area along the shoreline at Cisco Beach is also frozen. We have not seen any ice anglers on the lake, but it is likely they will be fishing on the ice by Friday. Be extremely careful if venturing out on the ice since there are many weak spots from springs and methane gas vents on Bear Lake. If the weather stays calm, the lake will likely freeze completely in the next few days.

Prior to ice up, anglers reported slow fishing for cutthroat trout and lake trout since the cisco run just ended. However, fishing should improve quickly over the next week as the cisco disperse and the trout begin to feed again.
There is no snow along the east side of the lake at this time and about 8” of snow along the west side of the lake. Access points for ice fishing have been plowed out at 150 South Street (Garden City) and 250 East Loop Street (just north of Ideal Beach/Sweetwater)

Laketown Reservoir:
Ice is about 8-12” thick. You can drive to the reservoir in a 4 wheel drive vechile and fishing has been good for rainbow trout using small jigs, Swedish pimples and flys (damels patterns). Try tipping your lure a meal or wax worm.

I spoke with several ice fishermen today. They were fishing off the pump house on the east side and reported the ice at 2-3" thick in about 65' of water. Good fishing for cutthroat and lakers using tubes and jigging spoons tipped with cisco. Not sure on ice thicknesses elsewhere on the lake.
