Here is maybe a dumb question.Do You have to use Ice Fishing line when Ice fishing? will just normal 6 lb mono work? What is the benefit of ice line.
Thanks!

I just use regular mono and don't have any problems, 4-6 pound is what i use, never used the ice line so don't know if there is a benefit.

Just use regular line. I use 12lb trilene XL summer and winter. Some rods I have rigged with 10lb trilene for longer casting in open water. Heck no need for ice poles either. The 5ft ultralight ugly stick is just as good on the ice as open water. Heck I might fish open water and ice in the same day with the same pole and reel LOL. I don't bother to switch to "ice" gear these days anymore. I don't ever recommend braid on the ice though. Now that does kill the bite when they see that rope LOL.

I have used many of the ice lines, regular mono, and braided. Just this year I was told to try flurocarbon and ill never go back to any of the others. It seems to sink faster, and freeze less.

The ice lines you see sold today are a softer compound mono that resists taking a set. Sinking faster and freeze less is due to set in the line as well. Line set is when you spool your line out and all it wants to do is lie on the water surface in coils. Using small/tiny jigs when ice fishing isn't hardly enough to pull the line coils through the surface tension on the water. That's why you can get a straight pin to float on a water filled glass (7th grade science experiment).
I like to use light mono (Stren Magnathin) no heavier than 6#. Most all of the name brands will be fine and then for those finicky bites add a short section of flourocarbon to the lure.

I agree with smoke, i personally use 4lb magnathin for all ice fishing except for the gorge. Great line for panfish and trout!
