A planned offshore fishing trip led to a hull filled with gasoline Thursday morning at a Race Trac gas station on State Road 16.
St. Johns County Fire Rescue officials said an unnamed individual intent on filling up his 27- or 28-foot boat around 5:30 a.m. accidentally filled the boat itself with gas rather than the gas tank.
"We're not 100 percent sure" how it happened, said Fire Rescue spokesman Jeremy Robshaw. "We are gathering that he inadvertently stuck the gasoline pump into the pole holder instead of the gasoline tank."
Because of the size of the spill -- 71 gallons -- Robshaw said it was likely the man clicked the lever on the pump to keep the gasoline flowing, then walked away to get a cup of coffee or do something else.
Robshaw said it was conceivable the man could make that mistake because fuel tank inlets on boats often are near the top railing of the boat, where the pole holders are usually positioned.
He said the Hazmat team was able to contain the spill and tip the boat enough to drain the fuel into five-gallon buckets, which it later disposed of.
Little gas was spilled and no injuries were reported, he said.
But the man probably still had to pay for the gas.
