Decided to make a quick run to DC for some rainbows, the last batch from the smoker have been gobbled up. Seems everyone knows when the smoker is fired up and show up just in time for warm fish. We were fishing by 9am. Walked into the Walsburg arm. Caught fish right away. Left about noon with some good size rainbows. The largest one was 17 inches. Anyway, about the 4 point. It is laying along the north side with one side of it's antlers buried in the ice. It's the first picture. The second picture is of the creepy crawlers that were in the fat bow. There must have been 1/4 cup of bugs and a lot of them were alive. The weather was cold but no wind and a great day.

huh, that guy found something good to eat! greedy bugger. Anybody know what those are?

Looks like it was a nice buck. Wonder if it died of old age? Looks like the trout have plenty of bugs to eat. Thanks for the report.

Those look like sow bugs.
I'm guessing the buck got.hit by a car and made it down to the res to die.
From the looks of things his body has not gone to waste!

The buck was not old, he had good teeth. He could have been hit by a car but was across the ice to the north side.
We have seen carcasses before on the west side and felt like the deer get on the ice and loose their footing, fall down and can't get up. the body was picked clean, the coyotes should be full.

I noticed the same bugs in the bows I caught today at DC. Still alive.

The biggest rainbows I have ever caught have been on a fly that imitates those bugs (sow bugs). I tie a 2" dropper 1' above another lure and just put smelly jelly on the fly. The bite is extremly light and you have to get right on the hook set. An old timer showed me this and it is deadly on big bows. When big bows were coming out of Scofield they were chucked full of those bugs. Nice job!

That fish has a belly full of sow bugs. Good sized ones at that.
