I took a drive to try and wet a few flies this morning. Wow, it was a beautiful day today! I couldn't believe how warm it was. I hope we have many more like it to come. Sorry, ice fishers!

I stopped and tried the Portneuf at a couple of places, but I didn't get any takers or even any hits in the few holes I tried. I really didn't try too hard, it was more of an opportunistic attempt, since I was passing by.

It was low and the water was off color with some meltwater coming in. It was really hard to find a place to park to get to any of the access areas.

I drove down to the Bear River by Grace. It was low and clear, but the stinking wind was certainly picking up.

I caught about a dozen rainbow hatchery deposits. They ranged in size from about 10 inches to about 13.

They were fun, but I was hoping for some carryover fish somewhere. In hindsight, I probably should have hiked up or down a lot further, but I just wanted to start fishing.

I went down a ways and hooked into something bigger --a nice fat carp. He really put up a fight on my 4wt, but in the end he took my two flies with him. Oh well, the fun of that fight was worth the price of two flies. Those buggers really have some shoulder muscle! I am going to have to resurrect the 7wt and go after them with some heavier tippet. What a blast!!

Evening is setting in --

Thanks for the report. It has been a long time since I have been on the Bear R. down there by Grace. That is a beautiful spot, and fun fishing.

The deer were out all over the place too. There were 5 in the yards down at the power plant. And then there were eight on this hillside.

On a less fun note I found that my waders still leak. And I also have found that when you drive into an area on a nice cool morning, it is no guarantee that the road won't be a muddy mess when you go to drive out!

Hey now, "Mud" is two of our four seasons! [Image: happy.gif]

Beautiful pictures cpierce! I, too, gave the ice a break and headed out on the Henry's Fork the other day in between classes. No gloves or hat were necessary! Landed a real nice cuttbow and lost a few others. It was great being out on the river again!

Outstanding pics, I was so wishing i was outside somewhere fishing today it almost felt like spring [cool]

It was so nice outside that I kept forgetting it was still winter. Judging from my lack of success in holes that I know have fish in them, I don't think I have this fishing the river in winter thing down yet. It will be fun to continue to learn though throughout this spring.

I had thought about taking a longer drive and trying the South Fork or Henrys. So many choices, what should I do..............?

For now --- winter will be back this afternoon. I know Mama Nature hasn't forgotten us!

Looks like you had a great day. I'm hoping to get out for some adventures soon myself if the weather and days off can just match up. That darn wind always seems to be a problem in Black Canyon. Fun place though, just watch your step there [shocked] People told me to watch for the pot holes, but they didn't tell me that some of them are filled with silt and look like solid ground when they're not [crazy]

The pot holes are NASTY!

I went in up to my thigh a couple of summers ago. I thought I was going to break my leg. At least it was warmer then, and getting totally wet wasn't as big of an issue.

Some of them are along the bank too and totally covered in mud and even plants. -- Maybe Black Canyon should be renamed to The Black Hole!

Beaver Holes. I love to fish sets of beaver dams but you really have to step lightly or your leg will be down in the hole to well . . . you know where. [Image: happy.gif]

there is a pot hole in there that i steeped in that went over my head. That night when i got home i went and bought a wadding stick. i wont step into that stretch of river without one now

If its a nice day and you want out, I would skip the south and head to henrys fork. Fished the south on sat. Was throwing raps and pulled a few fish out. Water is just a bit to high now for good wading on most of the riffles. Its at the weird level that above heise its too low for the jet but too high to wade most of the spots.

BMarsh - That is good to know. I haven't even checked river levels. I guess it is that time of year when one day it is low and a few hours of warm temps will push the levels up on the next day.

Bug -Sorry that happened to you, and I am so glad I haven't done that yet. I am going to try and remember and bring an old ski pole without a basket next time and give it a try. The key word there is --- remember!

As it is now, I am poking with my foot and I have to admit I am gun shy and nervous about where I am stepping when I am there. That blasted lava rock is more full of craters than the moon.

I think getting a wading stick would be a very good idea before I go back there again. I fished it for the 1st time last March, but thankfully I only made it up to my waste and I had chest waders on. It definitely could have been worse.

I was thinking I was one of the "few" who had found one of those holes. I guess it isn't "the few" and there are even more bad places than I thought. I too am definitely going to bring a wading stick next time. I am beginning to count myself as lucky to have gotten off lightly in this area.

talking with a buddy of mine from Grace after i went in that there have been a couple of folks drowned in the pot holes in that river so i admit before i move a foot in there I stab everywhere to make sure its solid
