Fished the Salmon last Friday and Saturday below Pather creek. Landed two and lost three more at the bank. Still winter down there! The road in was hard packed ice with fresh snow coming down hard on the way out Sat. night. No ramps were open - too many places still have ice all the way across to float any stretches. Ice was still lining the shores in the slower moving water. Word has it that Riggins has a fish per hour fishing right now. Should be just right in a couple of weeks. A neighbor caught seven fish right in Salmon on Tuesday and Wednesday last week. Good blizzard driving home - 5.5 hours to get back to Pocatello. Good luck to anyone headed up!!

Thanks for the report!
We were going to give it a try this weekend but with the colder temps I think we will wait another week.
Did you pull a drift boat up to try and float a section of the river? I met a guy from Pocatello last November that told me he floats that area all winter if the weather isn't too cold. Wondering if that was you?

sounds fun. We did riggins monday- and got a few fish, but it was far from hot. 4fish between 2 of us in 10 hours. but we were strictly throwing flies.

We did have a drift boat and dug out the Cove creek launch to get the boat in. Still had to contend with getting the boat in with 20' of ice along the shore. Too many ice bridges across the river to consider floating any sections! We just fished out from the launch and back again.

Whoever said riggins has a fish per hour is full of crap. Salmon river around riggins has been spotty at best. Little salmon river has fish here and there but no real numbers yet!

We landed 4 on Saturday. All keepers. Then only one on Sunday and it was wild. I lost a big one, but never got to see it. This weekend I am not expecting too much with the weather turning cold again. Supposed to be 0 or below the next 2 nights.

Man it would be nice to live that close to good steelhead fishing. But I can't complain I live 3 1/2 miles from the South Fork of the Snake. And the North Fork is pretty close as well.
How is that new steelhead rod working out for you? I have been itching to use the new one that I got for Christmas.

I am absolutely loving the new rod. Much lighter than the Gl3 and has 2 more inches in the handle for extra backbone. It was a fine investment

What did you get?

G. Loomis Steelhead series 8'8" medium heavy casting rod. Super sensitive and casts a country mile. Matched it with a Shimano Curado 201e7 reel

Sounds nice. I'm all set up with Cabela's XML's for steelhead, but I've been thinking about getting one of those gloomis' for a salmon rod. Been looking at the SAMR1174C and SAMR1265C. Know were I can get a deal?

I have always ordered from Cabela's. I don't trust anyone else with that kind of money.

I've been fishing with the GL3 8'6" fast action 8-12# test and I simply love it. Extreme sensitivity and plenty of backbone. Ditto on ordering from Cabelas - their service is the best.

I got an XML also but a bit shorter for muskies. Was hoping they made a longer for steelhead. How does that one feel for you?
