[bobhappy] Hey there boys n girls I'm a new member. I've fished a few dots out on mead and just wanted to thank everyone posting on all kinds of subjects. The information you all provide is more info then I've been able to locate on other websites. I'll be posting as soon as my lines wet again ( few weeks )

Welcome to the site, I am a large mouth/smallmouth guy myself. Bite really should pick up this week with the new moon, and will just get better from there. Do you have a boat, or are you fishing from shore?

I fish from shore for time being. I have an inflatable boat that'll be floating in the coves.

Yes I love me some largemouth action. And smallmouth as well. I was born in northern Nv so I've fished all over the state. If you ever have the chance to fish the ruby marshes in Elko county I strongly advise it. I'm somewhat new to the Vegas area. And am still working the kinks of mead out. But any real fisherman knows where fish hide and only needs to study and the rewards of dinner will come. I've only hooked up on a few strips being a shore boy makes that more challenging. But a wet line any day is better then a reeled line.

Lake Mead is an awesome huge bass fishery. I probably wouldnt be exagerating to say that its also one of the toughest. Bass fishing from shore is probably pretty difficult. I think a float tube would work well and can be had for fairly cheap. Welcome to the forums. Smile

Thanks kid, yeah Vegas bassin is the hardest I've come across. I've fished bass in Nv Utah Idaho and the bass at mead have no wants it seems sometimes. I caught a nice 3 lb large out at gov wash. Had some dude chew me put cause I kept it and wouldn't put it back so he could try for her next week. The bass was sitting on the nest and that guy was all ( yea there done nesting this time of year) dumb. Where abouts do everyone fish for them in the area?

Callville has a very good sm population. I got a nice 17" bass a few months ago. There is a few islands just outside the marina that hold fish.

The Whizzle knows where they are and fishes the non-striper Bass tourneys.

there all over, in typical and non typical bass spots. lolol

They will spawn this month and bigger females will start looking for nesting sites and males will be active around the females. callville has a great population as does Las vegas wash (inclding govt) but the better fishing is on the other side of the narrows. [cool]

Yeah, there are fish in our lake.

I would have yelled at you too! Why are you eating a 3lber off a bed?

BUT, it is legal. Judgement call, I guess.

Just remember, there are about 10 million stripers out there. Eat a few of those!

AND, welcome aboard. Bedding is under way, and bass fishing will be easy for the next few months. Shore fishing for bass here can suck cause you aren't gonna find a cove loaded with a school of fifty LMB, but you will get a few in the warmer months. Check out one of the "stickies" about shore fishing Mead- it shows some good spots.

I have never eaten black bass. I wonder how they taste. You wouldnt think they would taste nearly as good as a striper.

I have eaten a few, and they are delicious. Maybe one of my favorite freshwater fish. But I have never tried one from Mead.

I am a big time seafood eater and like just about every type of fish. In my opinion Stripers are much better to eat than large or small mouth bass. I release every LMB I catch and usually keep every striper I catch. Besides the LMB popualtion in Mead could use a little help especially during spawning season. I would definitely suggest releasing them. I have been making fish tacos with stripers for years and they are always a hit even with kids.

Our bass population definitely needs help. There is not much cover in our lake, and fisherman are pretty efficient at picking bass off beds this time of year. We need to make sure they go back to that bed and spawn out. You crave LMB that bad? Wait a couple months for the fry to grow up. That was only a 3 lb fish because of the half pound of eggs in her.

I think we are gonna have a huge spawn this year. Im excited about it. I like cathing stripers dont get me wrong, but theres just something about catching lmb and smb that just feels different. Its like you feel like KVD everytime you lip one and hold it up. Its like a feeling of accomplishment or something while catching a striper just feels like catching a striper. lololol

of course, im talking single digit stripers. If I ever get a trophy striper, Ill let you know if anything changes. lololol

Aww jeez you guys just opened up a can of worms on this one [shocked]. Theres always going to be two sides of the story. The catch & release crowd VS. The harvesters.

Some fish for sport others for fun some for food some just keep em for bragging rights. Each and every water is different as are the rules. According to the handbook there is a limit of 6 black bass at mead. Its up to the individual angler to make that choice.

Personally I'm a redneck so I keep everything no matter the water, size or species. But keeping smallies or largies is just a line I have a hard time crossing don't get me wrong the meat is nice white n flaky but I know i'll be pissed in the future when theres no more around for me or my family to catch therefore the good angel [angelic] sitting on my shoulder forces me to release them and I just feel bad when comes time to fillet them up and find eggs.

Also to the guys that keep the trophy stripers please release them so I can catch them too. Just kidding don't get all huffy n puffy over that last statement I know theres plenty.
