Fished the Soldier Creek side of Strawberry today with two of my friends. Got on the ice and holes punched by 7:15. I was pleasantly surprised that the slush was not an issue at all. Cold temps have helped, I guess.
Fishing was good most of the morning, caught lots of bows, and a few slot cutts. The ratio or rainbows to cutts was probably 4 or 5 to 1.
We caught most the fish on white or chartreuse jigs tipped with waxies. Between the three of us we caught 46. We returned everything we caught back to catch another day.
The catching slowed way down for us between 1 and about 3. We moved a couple times during that time frame trying to find some fish interested in hitting. The last couple hours after 3 were productive using the same offerings that were working earlier in the day.
It was worth the trip up. Only saw three other groups all day.

Great report and very good photos. I especially like photo #3. I've got a jacket just like that one. I spent all of the 2002 Winter Olympics working at Deer Valley with the "Killer Bee" crew.

Thanks Mike. Those jackets are so warm that I can't hardly find anything else that doesn't cost an arm and a leg to wear. Plus, the price was right! I spent the Olympics running around all the different venues with media. (PIO).
We had a great day, but hookinup slayed them. I think he caught close to 25 that day. Nice fish up there. Good luck
What is the access like to soldier creek? Where is a good place to go that is accessible?

It's a short walk down to the ice from the highway if you park at the turn off to the dam where I usually go. If you are not familiar with that spot, it is about ten miles east of the turn off to strawberry bay, I think. Just look for the sign on the highway that points you to the dam. It is the last place you can see the reservoir, right before you drop into the "Deep Creek" canyon.
There is usually a place to park in a plowed parking lot on the lake side of the road.
There is a hill (about 50 yards long) that you have to walk down to get to the ice, but it is usually packed out by snow mobiles, unless you go right after a storm before they get a chance to run around a bit.
The walking from there can be easy or a little bit of a pain, depending on the slush. But, when there is slush up there, you will get it pretty much where ever you go.
It is a good access point, though, if your access to the lake is on foot.
Another decent access point is back on the highway at the view area just east of the ladders. I think it is at mile post like 46 or so. Same deal, though. A hill to get down to the lake. The view area hill is a little longer and streeper than Soldier Creek. It too usually gets a good path from snow mobiles. Hope that helps.

It does help thank you! We tried going to solder creek last weekend, as I like that side better, but i wasn't sure where to park etc.. so we just went to the ladders, didn't catch a thing. The Ice was still really thick.
We are going to try this Saturday, hopefully it will still be safe!
thanks!
