I know i am going to open a can of worms here. But I am looking for some input on grim reaper broad heads on elk.
Two years ago everybody was telling me how good Rage broadheads were so I jumped on the band wagon and I have not been impressed. First year with them I had my elk at 12 yards and my arrow went clean throu but the broad head was in poor shape. This last year I had him at 30 yards and only one blade deployed and angled my arrow thru one lung and liver. Needles to say he traveled a long way before I found him.
I have heard a lot of good things about Grim reapers I just need some input on them.
Thanks

I dont know much about the grim reepers, sorry man i shoot the g5 strikers and really like them. I use to shoot the g5 montecs but i couldnt get them as sharp as i liked so thats why i swicthed. Ived been really happy with the strickers except for the price

Ive looked at the G5 strikers also. I may go that route. What grain do you shoot?

I like the 100 grain for there extra velocity.

Have you had any experience with them on elk?

I too shoot the Montecs 100gr, but I am probably going to switch to the Slick Trick with the cut to the tip blades. I have and will always use a fixed blade head. With a mechanical there is always the what if factor. I know that 99% of the time the mechanicals work just fine but what if........? I can't handle that, so I like a broadhead that will cut as long as I hit my target. The Grim Reaper has good reviews but, what if.....? You have already experienced a what if, do you really want to try that again? My buddy shoots the Strikers and has killed a few elk, they work just fine.

If you dont mind me asking, what is making you change to the slick tricks?
The only reason Im thinking Grim reaper is I have a friend that last year got his bull with them and was impressed with them. Im still leaning towards a fixed blade.

Thanks for your input you guys

I have recently changed bows, and my new one (PSE AXE6) shoots about 320 fps. My Montecs don't fly as well at that speed. They flew great out of my old set up, wich was about 280fps. My buddy bought some of those slick tricks and I tried them out, they flew great, held tight groups out at 60 yards, and I was impressed with their durrability also. I used the wrong pin and shot his broadhead into the 4x4 post under my target. OOPS! After we cut the broadhead out of the wood it was in perfect condition, myabe a little dull, but I have pulled several other broadheads out of that same piece of wood and almost all of them bend when they hit the dry solid wood. A live tree is different though.
So that is what I based my decision on. The montecs worked ok, but they just are not as acurate at higher speeds.

Is the slick trick a cut on contact? And also what grain are you shooting?

Thanks for your input.

I have shot two elk with them and neither of them went more than 80 yards. Just like elkoholic i will always shoot a cut on contact broadhead because of the extra penatration. I used to shoot the montecs and they did well but i switched because i could not get them as sharp as i liked.

They make a cut on contact head and a chisel point head. The chisel point is smaller than a Muzzy, probably more like a Thunderhead. Both are 4 blade, and I think either one would be a better choice than an expandable of any brand.
I shoot 100gr broadheads, for what it's worth.

Im leaning real heavy towards a cut on contact broad head. I only shoot a little over 60lbs and a 27" draw. So I am not the fastest arrow out there. Im just trying to find out what will shoot well and hold up and mostly penetrate.

Thanks a lot for your input and advice.

The wife shoots Muzzys in 125 grain and has done well with them. In the past 5 seasons she has taken a spike, two cow elk and 2 bucks (4X1 and a 3X3) 75 yards is the farthest any have traveled. I switched a couple years ago to the Slick Tricks in 125 grain cause I had heard how well they fly, I haven't been disappointed. I took a 6X6 bull 2 years ago in WY. and they seemed to do the job just fine, I didn't have any shots last year so I haven't killed enough with the Slick Tricks to form a good or bad opinion yet. There are alot of good blades on the market, I have not personally used a mechanical broadhead so I don't really have a good or bad opinion on them.

I also shoot the G5 Montecs. I personally love them with my 28" and 65 lb. draw. They fly exactly the way my field points do out to my last pin at 65 yards. The only downside has already been stated... it is a pain to get them sharp again. I have seen that there is actually a sharpening stone made for them, but I have never tried it. I turn each one I shoot into a practice tip, and just buy new ones. It is a bit pricey that way, but I like to know what I am flinging out there is razor sharp.

P.S. I am with everyone else on mechanicals, I just can't bring myself to trust them to work every time. I don't think I will every stray away from cut on contacts.... but that's just personal preference I guess.

Packfan, The slick tricks have good reviews. I just cant find any to look at.

Bowhunter3, Why do you like the G5 over the Strikers? I have seen both of them at the stores. The Striker looks like you can replace the blades the G5 are one piece.

I really do appricate all of responses from everybody.

Wormsinker, thank you also. In a couple weeks im getting serous and start shooting.

I would not try to steer you away from the strikers either (my dad shoots them) but for whatever crazy reason the montecs (G5 is the brand of both these broadheads) shot exactly like my field points. The strikers shot decent, but not quite as consistent for me. And, the strikers you can replace the blades, but I just personally don't feel as comfortable shooting a tip that had been shot or dulled, even with new blades (I know I am crazy) so I would probably just buy new if I shot the strikers anyways.

Not sure but when I bought mine a couple years ago (1 1/2 Doz.) I think I bought them online thru Cabelas.

Today I saw a Muzzy mx phantom cut on contact. It looked good. Have any of you had any experience with them or heard much about them.
