I was up fishing last Friday at Strawberry with Mac Attack and another buddy. Toward the end of the day I caught a Cutthroat on a white jig.
When I got it up on the ice, I noticed it was crapping out all kinds of junk. It wasn't the typical bug colored stuff that I typically see coming out of a well fed fish. It was yellowish. The fish's sides were quivering, and I also noticed a small amount of blood on it's rectum.
I know..... too much information. There is a point coming here.
When I looked closer at it, it became obvious that what it was "discharging" was corn. The fish was in the slot, so I returned it, but I am not very confident that anyone else will get the chance to catch that particular Cutthroat again.
I know fishing with corn is illeagal. I don' t do it, and I was upset that someone else had been doing it.
I have heard that corn will kill fish. Is this an absolute? Anyone else experienced something like this where they have caught a fish full of corn?
Here's the picture.

The fish you caught was not only an indication that someone recently may have been fishing with corn, but was probably chumming with corn as well. Those actions would actually consistitute two different violations of the wildlife regulations and would subject the violator to a rather substantial fine.
A true sportsman always obeys the regulations and has a higher regard for the resource. It's unfortunate there are fishermen out there with such a blatant disregard for the rules.
Just my opinion, take it for what it's worth.

The corn itself wont kill the fish, but the toxicity built up from not being able to defecate will.
Ever notice com in your poo? We can't digest the tough hull. Neither can the fish. Only their digestive system is much more narrow than ours,so they essentially.get clogged up and can't pass anything through.
Sad thing is, fish LOVE corn......

I agree. What is the fun in doing that kind of crap? I have never understood it. First time I have ever seen anything like this. Can't help but wonder how many other fish were affected like the one I caught that were under the ice. In addition to unethical and illegal, it's selfish, really.

I can't see any corn. Roe?

Sorry... the picture didn't turn out too good. some is on the side of the fish from when I pulled it onto the ice. There was more kernals on the ice itself. The picture doesn't show it very well. It was definatly corn. I looked at it pretty close. Enough of it that it looked like someone chummed with the corn.

Corn will kill a fish if it is not a big enough candidate to pass, that is crap, the corn out. So smaller fish will usually die because, as noted above, the digestive system gets blacked up and they can no longer properly digest any food. Because this fish was already crapping the stuff out it may well survive.

if you dont mind where was this fish caught at alot of times the same people fish the same places

Soldier Creek side off of the dam road. It was over by the bathroom on that point (about a mile off of HWY 40). We caught about a dozen fish over there, but this was the only one like that.

Corn will not kill the fish . There was a study done at a hatchery ,where one run of fish was fed the pellets they normally use and one run was fed straight whole kernel corn for 90 days . The mortality rate was the same for both runs . The fish that were fed straight corn did not grow as well as the others , but had no effect on there health . That is why it is legal to use corn in Idaho . It don't hurt the fish . Curt G.

Probably the same guys that were putting dog food down their holes last year about this time. There were multiple holes filled with dried dog food. All along there.
I reported it to the fish and game.
About 20+ years ago the same thing happened there. When they checked your fish they would cut them open to check for corn.
They finally went under cover and caught a whole group chumming corn.
That little bay by the road was dry back then.

I caught a rainbow at deer creek a month ago with the same thing. He had a belly completely full of corn. The folks who are doing this are either really desperate for food or just sh**y (thread pun) fishermen who can't catch a fish using legal techniques, they've got to cheat.

You were too kind referring to them as fishermen. They're A--HOLES plain & simple.

Back in the day, before corn was illegal, EVERYONE chummed with corn at Strawberry. At one point there was a layer of kernels a foot thick on the bottom of Mud Bay and it was killing vegetation and depleting the O2 levels so the DWR made corn on the water illegal.
Corn won't block the poop chute but fish get almost no nutrition from it so they don't grow as fast if they are eating it instead of nutritious bugs and minnows. If corn stopped trout up, how would they ever pass those snails they seem to always be full of?
And I hope they catch the chummers and take their gear and box their ears!

This gives a new definition to the term "corn hole"- even if they can pass it, it looks like it does a number on the O-Ring of the poor fish. Hope they catch whoever's doing it.
