Got up this morning and thought about heading down to the ISE, but all my friends were busy today. So I decided to take out my new boat for its first fishing trip now that the ice has cleared up on Bear Lake. I also wanted to test out the kicker motor and Penn downriggers (since I've been using Canon's forever). Anyway, I'm glad I went. I caught just two fish in about 3 hours, but I was playing around with everything and not really concentrating on fishing as much as I should have been. The one fish was a really nice one for Bear Lake standards. I also took a few pics of the new boat.
[inline DSCF3745.JPG] 38" and my scale weighed in at just over 22lbs! Personal best for Bear Lake!

Scott,

Nice looking boat (except for the color of course[Wink]) you have there.[Smile] Also, congrats on a personal best Bear Lake mack.

I keep forgetting about this BYU-Utah thing. If I had my way, my boat would be Maize and Blue! Hey, I'm just thankful that its not green and white. Then, I would have issues.

I have no room to talk -- my boat is also red and white.

Now your stylin' Scott.[cool]

And, a red Lund and a big fat lake trout, together again. What a coincidence![laugh] You will find there IS something to that.[sly]

That mack looks like its well-fed too. So there IS potential for these in Bear Lake if they are given a chance to grow over 5-10 pounds?

Curious as how the Penn down riggers compared to the Cannons?

I've had Canons for a long time, but I really like the Penns better than the ones I had. Why? Because when you crank up the Penn you can get 2-3' of pull for every crank. My old Canons were one turn = one foot. With riggers down deep, that makes a lot less turns to bring up the ball with the Penns. HOWEVER, the new Canons have a "high speed" retrieve which probably puts them in line with the older Penns I have on my boat. I also think the Penns have a smoother clutch when you let them down. One good point for the Canons is that the clutch/crank only takes one hand to operate and with the Penns, they are separate. I got used to them quickly and LOVE the swivel bases. I refused to pay about $100 for a swivel base for the Canons and therefore they were "fixed" position on my old boat.

Thanks Jim!
Big lakers like that are not that common and as I said this one was my personal best out of Bear Lake. The lakers can get big, but I would estimate that a 20lb laker out of Bear Lake is about as common as a 40 lb laker at the Gorge. Oh, the fish was carefully released and looked in great shape. Probably a 30 year old + fish.

[font "Comic Sans MS"][#800000]Very sweet ride Scott. When you decide to go electric on the riggers, think Big Jon. I may have to come up in April and try out the new HDS 7.[/#800000][/font]

Thanks for the info, i run Cannons on my boat, but i am always looking for pros and cons of other manufactures,
I definitely here your point on the swivel bases. I also like the faster retrieval , specially when fishing alone.

The old one was sold the morning after I got the new one! My neighbor bought it, so it'll still be around here at Bear Lake.

Good deal ... That ole girl will know just where to take your neighbor for the good fishing.
