Went to Brownlee yesterday and the fishing was horrible. There were quite a few people up there getting ready for some tourneys this weekend and I only heard of one bass caught. Water temps ranged from 43 to 46 and it was muddy. Upstream from the hay fields was filled with debris including some big logs and a 55 gallon drum. The Weiser River didn't look too bad and I'm guessing we were probably about a week or two early. We marked some schools of what had to be crappie at around 20-25' but couldn't get them to make the commitment.

As I'm sure most of you agree, poor fishing doesn't mean a bad day. We found this crappie floating on the surface with a baby bullhead sticking out of it's mouth. They were both still twitching a little but I wouldn't say they were alive. Their gill plates got hooked together - I'd never seen that before. You gotta admire that crappies ambition even given the tragic ending. Other memorable events included watching bald and golden eagles do their thing, seeing approximately 250,000 wild turkeys and meeting a nice guy who is allergic to chicken. Overall, a pretty good outing.

That is not a bull head. It is a channel cat. It has a forked tail and spots. Did that crappie eat that cat? Ron

That is awesome.

I think idahoron is right it looks more like a channel cat then a yellow belly. From the pics it doesnt look like it had swallowed it very far so like said maybe the spines from the catfish injured the gills, thats only my opinion.

Bald eagles are always nice to see in my book i love it [Smile]

Sorry about the misidentification - I don't know squat about fish with whiskers. The gill plate of the catfish was hooked into the inner gills of the crappie and they were connected good. I had to use pliers to get the catfish out. It didn't look like the spines played a part. The crappie was clearly trying to eat it probably couldn't swallow it because it was too big and couldn't spit it out because the gill plate was stuck. I hope I don't die that way.

If you don't try to swallow a live 6" Channel Cat chances are you won't.

It is still amazing, that crappie must of been starvin. Never seen that before, however i did catch a bass once when i went to pull the hook out i noticed a tail and two little legs hangin out in the back of its throut, It had just ate a mouse right before i caught it.

back in the olden days when there was waterin Indian Creek reservoir (near the Stage sop between Boise nand Mountain Home) there giagantor bluegills in there, largemouths, and crappie. It was a lot of fun to go out in a float tube and drop little black micro jigs down the holes in the weeds.

Anyway- it seemed like everytime I caught a largemouth, it would have a little black leech or two sucking on the top of its mouth. Guess they needed to learn to swallow harder or something.

I always wore thick neoprene waders in that water- I'm like humphrey Bogart in "African Queen" when it comes to leeches.
