ELBERTON, GA- The Walmart Bass Fishing League is headed to Lake Russell April 2 for the third of five stops in the Savannah River Division. As many as 400 boaters and co-anglers will be competing for top awards up to $9,500 and $3,000, respectively.

"Although the spawn has started on the lake bed fish are typically hard to catch on Russell," said Walmart FLW pro Troy Morrow of Toccoa, Ga. "The key is going to be finding the largemouth that are moving up into staging areas near secondary points and around timber.

"The spotted bass have really taken over the lake so finding the largemouth won't necessarily be easy," Morrow added. "There will be a lot of fish caught, but with the dominance of the spots the key to victory is going to be finding that largemouth. I think it will take about 15 pounds to win."

Takeoffs and weigh-ins will be at Richard B. Russell State Park located at 2650 Russell State Park Road in Elberton. Takeoff is scheduled for 7:30 a.m. while weigh-in will begin at 3:30 p.m. Takeoffs and weigh-ins are free and open to the public.

The BFL is a 24-division circuit devoted to weekend anglers, offering bigger prizes to those who qualify for regional championships and those who make it to one of the longest-running championships in all of competitive bass fishing - the Walmart BFL All-American presented by Chevy. Top winners in the BFL can move up to the EverStart Series or even the Walmart FLW Tour.

The Lake Russell BFL tournament is being hosted by the Elbert County Chamber of Commerce.
