March pretty much sucked weather wise, but it went out on a high note today. Finally a day off where it didn't snow and I didn't have to bundle up to go outside. I decided to go check out The Little Bear River as I hadn't really fished it in the 3 years I've lived in Cache.
Things started really well. The first little pocket scored me three browns [inline "brown 2 small.JPG"][inline "brown small.JPG"]and I probably missed as many on Copper Johns. I picked up several more in the first hour, [inline "brown 3 small.JPG"]even getting one on a Turk's, though I kept missing a lot of fish too. I must be rusty from the winter. Those browns had some amazing colors, [inline "brown 4 small.JPG"]and they fought very well for their size. Unfortunately the wind kicked up making high sticking really difficult. It seemed like the water was getting deeper and swifter too, and after looking here:[inline flow.JPG]
I see that it wasn't just my imagination. I managed to pick off a couple more browns before some moron showed up and started blasting his huge sound system. It was getting harder to wade and I couldn't find any more water I really wanted to fish. I was pretty sick of the noise too. That was my cue to head out. As I walked back to my car I couldn't help but notice all the beer cans and other trash strewn about, the scattered fire pits as well as the phrase "catch and cook" scratched into the special regulations sign. It's really a shame that people have to go and ruin good things. It's no wonder people who own property don't want it open to the public. I am liking this stream and I plan on heading back when the water goes down. I really need to make friends with some of the property owners downstream so I don't have to share that small stretch of river with all the dirtbags.
I didn't have much time before I needed to head home, but I decided to swing by the lower section of The Blacksmith Fork for a half hour. The water is up and beginning to turn a little murky. I found a small pocket of slower water against the bank and quickly had a fish slash at my Turk's. Soon I caught a brown on a golden stone nymph before running out of fishable water. I got back to my car and remembered there was a large pool below the bridge I parked near. I found a hungry cutthroat here[inline "cutt small.JPG"] and had a couple of other fish flash on my fly.
Overall it was a beautiful day and I was happy to be out, even if it wasn't the hottest action ever.
