I'm headed up to Deer Creek to Fish... I hear there is open water on most of the lake.
Never trolled there, but just curious if anyone has any advice?
depth, lure, location? Was going to try north of the island.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

You hear a lot about the Island, but I do better elsewhere. This time of year you'll likely mark the fish on the top of the water column, but just mark them and target them at the depth they're at. Don't feel you need to stick to the shorelines either. I catch a lot of fish out in the open lake.
Let me know how your trip goes. I'm aching to get out there.

For whatever it's worth, we used to mainly use Triple Teasers at Deer Creek on lead core, orange or chartreuse. They worked very well, but that was several years ago. Like someone said, just trolling right across the middle of the lake can be as good as anywhere else. It being this early in the year might make a difference in that, though. Come to think of it, we used to catch an awful lot of rainbows on Velveeta too....[cool]

Got fishing about 7:30am. Used a downrigger with a rainbow rapala at about 8-10ft. Caught a few on that.
Used a orange/yellow needle fish and caught a few more.
use small pop gear (without downrigger) with rapala and caught a few more.
9 total, then at 10:30am, the wind kicked up and white caps everywhere, so we headed in.
Caught 2 just dragging green gulp alive minnows with some powerbait..
Nothing was real fast, but steady
We had the most luck just doing a big circle at the Deer Creek Marina from Wallsburg bay to the West shore and back. We went up by the dam, but didn't get anything.
Thanks everyone for the tips. Fish were between 5-15 ft usually, so you can get to them without going too deep.
