My Yankee visitor is becoming a (squatter)J Leonard headed out early this morning while all other folks had to work!!! However I was able to meet him around 2:30 in W T
.
He had boated several yellows, 3 keeping Crappie using minnows and a few bream. We tried a few lay downs when I got in the boat and a spawning flat but the wind was terrible so we headed for some comfort and a community dock. We managed a few more keepers with about a 5 to 1 throw back ratio. According to my tally which was marked on my hand. I believe I had 30 throw backs. I done everything I knew to do to teach him how to detect the bite using a BG. I used his rod and shot it (although my Indiana buddy is picking it up pretty well). I’d hand him his rod and watch his line and say set the hook but it’s difficult when the conditions are like they were today.
Any way, we ended up with 14 Crappie and a 7 lb LM. He did manage the nice trash fish on a minnow while fish Harrison Bay stumps (on a minnow)! It made his TRIP and he has even decided to stay and fish another day (dang squatter)!
The wind calmed down a little and we finally hit some lay downs and I was able to help him put 5 of our keeping 14 in the boat with out a short. In my opinion it didn’t matter the color. It was all location. Once again today on the docks it had to be in the shaded area and next to posts. In the trees, it was down in the tips. I did get a few on about a 7 count but could not get that to be consistent. Anyway we tried and had a good evening. Guess I will have to take a day off tomorrow to try one last time to get a few more Crappie so my Indiana Squatter doesn’t become a permanent resident of Apison! I did notice him stop at ACE on the way home, I am wondering if he bought himself a mailboxJ
