Hi, I'm new,great site,I caught this ,4/13/11 16,3/4 pounds 49"South Florida longnse gar, its rare for longnose down here in miami.caught in everglades L3 canal could be the only gar caught this far south for "rod and reel". biologist picked up my fish today around noon thinking it was a Florida gar. I will consider eating next gar I catch. I wonder witch is tastier, FL.gar or longnose? thanks.Buffalo Tiger is an indian chief ,he lives across the street, says he used to eat them all the time. and has never seen a longnose gar.
hometown hero .One was caught in Homestead,a bit more south,20min.drive,that longnose was caught electrofishing..dude never got back with me on size or weight?,probably smaller than mine.[cool]sorry to of skipped on my introduction,I just been wanting to share my pics so bad I did'nt even think about it.One thing about me,I am known to influence peoples lives.securedownload is the gar pic,I was totally dumbfounded when I saw this fish at the end of my line,I seen tarpon in this canal so I thought it was one.A strong fish long fight.couple of times I had to hold my spool to keep him out of the lillies,got her on 6lb suffix braid,on a cheap durangospinning outfit 6to 12 lb rod.

That's a nice gar man. We've got some big ones here too, but I can't say i've ever put any thought into persuing a record. I'll see if I can pull up some of the ones we've caught. I believe i've got a couple pics in my gallery of big gars.

Very nice fish. I was able to get a 36" one many years back when I fished Florida. Thats still a memory. But yours is something. [cool][cool]

Ya thanks I heard its rare for them down here, thats if its a longnose.Only 2 other reported down here in south fl . Now now I feel like a northern chap .I.allways wanted to catch a big gar .a good 15years fishing down here and my prev.best... a 4lb florida gar weighed with rapalla digitalscale, maybe 2of them,and some 3's thanks .A young guy from the FWC took the gar for a better look , after another guy took a bunch of pics 3 days earlier?Next one im eating they say they can go in saltwater. I have seen tarpon there before,in the same canal, even saw a beaver while on land eating lunch,he also was on land in the pine trees,lol, people usually just laugh about that story,beavers are rare also around here.

Damn my fish might be a longnose gar,not a florida gar ,or spotted gar ,same thing.I thought it was a record gar ,I never thought there were longnose gar around here.

I'm mounting it myself,I have it hanging from the tree,I first removing the insides.removed the skin from one side,I will do something with the scales,maybe I will make a ,bracelet,arrow tips,or use it as armor.

on yozuri salt water edition,line wraped once around his nose,I got lucky pretty much. lure is Blue on top.

I kept the gar,did a "dead mount"see pics., I had to keep it in icewater for Biologist,its eyes were cloudy, it was in icewater longer than a week.originaly I was going to eat it.I did a self mount,looks cool,just need some gar eyes.I will post pic of mount.The scales are awesome,I want to make an arowhead out of some.I only washed it with bleach,and scrubbed it clean,has a blue color to him,neighbor thought I painted him?Just posted my selfmount,including a ring from it I made it. A bracelet pic comming soon including some armor I am wearing on my chest,from gar skin. Thank you all for viewing,I tried to make the best of a fish many consider worthless.I made a nice bracelet using 2 rows of scales,and attached it with a clear strech string.pic comming soon,its none of these 3 pics.If I had more skin I would make a gar suit.I feel like replacing my nails with gar scales
