After doing yard work and other chores Sunday, I noted the dark clouds building up over the Owyhees in the late afternoon. The air was still with that muggy feeling. My wife and I took a ride down to the ramp to see if anyone was fishing Lake Lowell. There was no one there, so I hopped in the truck and launched my boat at 5 PM.
The water temp on the stretch I fished was 54-55 degrees and flat. Within 10 minutes I had a nice 15" LM on the line. This was followed up by a fat 17" fish. The next two hours saw the wind pick up and the air temperature drop, but the fish stayed active. I had 13 fish take my black Assalt skirted worm, but I only landed 7. My technique was not great. Some fish got off in the brush, one broke off on a laydown tree, and some I just didn't get the hook into well enough. The fish were in 1-3' of water and relating to brush and wood.
It was a good evening of fishing on the spur of the moment. I probably could have enticed a few more to bite, but my dog said it was past his dinner time, so we gave it up. We had the lake to ourselves.
