After doing yard work and other chores Sunday, I noted the dark clouds building up over the Owyhees in the late afternoon. The air was still with that muggy feeling. My wife and I took a ride down to the ramp to see if anyone was fishing Lake Lowell. There was no one there, so I hopped in the truck and launched my boat at 5 PM.

The water temp on the stretch I fished was 54-55 degrees and flat. Within 10 minutes I had a nice 15" LM on the line. This was followed up by a fat 17" fish. The next two hours saw the wind pick up and the air temperature drop, but the fish stayed active. I had 13 fish take my black Assalt skirted worm, but I only landed 7. My technique was not great. Some fish got off in the brush, one broke off on a laydown tree, and some I just didn't get the hook into well enough. The fish were in 1-3' of water and relating to brush and wood.

It was a good evening of fishing on the spur of the moment. I probably could have enticed a few more to bite, but my dog said it was past his dinner time, so we gave it up. We had the lake to ourselves.

Smart Weed,

Sounds like you found a little warmer water than we did Saturday morning. I found 50 - 51 deg straight across from the Nampa dam and that was the warmest. We got off the water at around 2:00 or 3:00PM. Flipped dark colored ring worms in the brush and ran black spinner baits and chatter baits around the edges but didn't get any takers. New boat ran well however. That was mostly this trip out was about.

Hey Smartweed...Ive never had a chance to fish Lowell yet and would love a shot at her...as my boat is in Indiana and It would cost more to go get it than it would to replace it...im boatless at the moment..if you have an extra seat and want to make a new friend I'd love to come with...Im about 15 minutes away and can usually get free on a moments notice so if you're game let me know... Send me an email and I'll give you my number.

I can't really say I retired here, as I moved to my place 53 years ago. Back then I lived on a gravel washboard road, and Lake Lowell was a duck hunters paradise. We also had a terrific population of pheasants. I even shot a couple of deer along the lake shore, back when we had a season. Now they just kill them with cars, the ducks are 10% of what they were, and there are few pheasants. However, the bass fishing is better than it was back then, and we have lots of valley quail.
