Now I know if you didn't read that closely you probably think this is a Crapy question it isn't. I need some bait and with the water levels at an all time high there has to be an area where the CARP are hanging out right now. Any idea where I could go grab a few in the Northern Utah area. (Cutler, Benson)

Sounds like your up in cache valley- I can usually get a carp to bite in the slough on the south west side of the land fill. Right next to the road. Im pretty sure its Logan city property but it's not posted or anything. I just drift a worm with no weight and sometimes a bobber. Even had a crawfish clamp onto the worm using that method there. Due to the proximity to the land fill I personally wouldn't eat anything out of there (just a side note) [Smile] also if your not careful the carp will spook, so be very sneaky. Lol

There are usually a ton of them in the slough by the Benson church, and I usually don't have any trouble catching them at the marina either. This year though, I haven't even really seen them around. I haven't tried to catch any though, so maybe they're just not jumping and slurping the surface as usual.

There a backwater sports access if you take the road from Smithfield to Benson. They always seem to be flopping around in there. Seen lots up in the shallows wallowing north of the Benson launch. You'll find them all up and down bear too (prolific sons of beeches)

So west of the dump? There's a little puddle to the east too.
I've got some carp recipes. Maybe smoked.
Of course TD will tell you how to plank a carp if you ask.

Was talking with a bow-hunter over the weekend, and sounds like with the high water - some fields are flooded, and rumor is the carp are swimming up in there. Wouldn't be surprised if some get trapped.
Oughta put on some waders and take out a pitchfork, unless that's not legal, in which case I'd never suggest it....

so do you need a fishing license of a hunting license to bow-hunt for carp?
I had a short break between school and work today and checked out that area. I didn't have my rod with me, but I saw some monsters in one of those little creeks that runs through the area. They were holding on current seams just like trout. I may have to go back with my 8wt.

Met up with an angler from work and headed out to the bayou. We looked at the puddle right by the landfill entrance, but the water's low - no go. Didn't really explore west of the landfill, so not sure which area's been described. But all through Cutler - they're out there!

My bud knew the same spot I was thinking off. It's not on the road to Amalga, but if you go out airport road on the way towards Newton. Sportsmans access, and the carp are always wallowing around in there. Whole flocks of them slurping the surface. He managed to pull in what had to be a 7 or 8 lber, my son learned how tuff they are when he tried to "bring it in" with a pitchfork. Tuff Hide!
Also landed a decent mud-cat.
I hooked into something, then it was gone. Couldn't get them to take my worms on the bottom, or bread on the top. Have to try again - big dark shadows, and loads of em!

Carp on a fly eh? Fun ride!
That will test your precision casting if you can drop a fly into a carps mouth while it is sucking the surface... How else can you get a carp to take a fly? They would be a blast with an old 8wt, I'd hate to use my good stuff on them.. But I really don't know what they would take... Maybe strip a worm pattern... It would be a fun tug if you could hold on to them...

I've caught plenty fishing with jigs, so fly is not out if the question at all. in my experience of trying to catch one on the fly it's harder than you would think because they are fairly skiddish but I probably just suck. There is a carp post on the fly fishing forum that you should definatly check out.

I guess I prefer trout when I pull the fly rod out and I've never had enough extra time to try carp.. Sounds fun though...

I used to fly fish for carp all the time. I actually used a 6wt back then. They like egg patterns, buggers, nymphs and even bread imitations. I should have gone after carp today, the kitties wanted nothing to do with me.

Not impossible on a fly.

Its a shame to have to burn such a nice net though....

Reunion at the Barbary May 20th and 21st...scary stuff right there.

@ Coyote spinner, you currently need a fishing license to bowfish. It has been presented to the DWR to have the carp listed like coyotes: year round, no license when bowfishing.

They have been receptive to making some changes. Cross your fingers.
