RALEIGH, N.C.—North Carolina's newest trout fishery could soon become the state's best, according to fishery officials.

The still-developing trout mecca is the Catawba River tailrace, below Lake James. "The potential exists for this river to produce 30-inch brown trout, which is tremendous," says Doug Besler, cold water fisheries research coordinator for the North Carolina Wildlife Commission. "We've already sampled 22- and 25-inch fish."
