I had a decent day on Willard Saturday including a very interesting first... almost.

I have taken loads of Wipers, Crappie, and Cats on fly gear but never a Walleye. That almost changed Saturday afternoon when I lost a beauty right at the net. I did catch 2 on spinning gear however.

WOW! Nice fish!
I can't even imagine catching a wiper on a fly rod the way they run. Bet you been into your backing more than once.[laugh]

Thanks for the Pics

Nice! I guess you were using a minnow imitation like the one in your avatar, how are you presenting them?

When I target Wiper with my fly rod, I use a type 2 sinking line and strip Buggers and Zonkers in White, Olive or Chartruse color.

My son and I fish for them both from the shore and the boat.
Shore fishing is usually quite good.
I use either a 6 or 7 wt rod in 9' or 9.5' length.
No tapered leader, just 5' or 6' of 8# or 10# tipit.

Wiper on a fly is a rush!

when do you usually do well from shore? I've got access to a boat but with gas prices the way they are if I can take my little car up there and give it a try i just might

Right now!
Evenings are a good choice for a fly rod.
Just fish along the dike on the North side of the reservoir.
I like to fish the South side of the North Marina.
Park inside the Marina, on the South side and fish outside the Marina, in the open Bay.
The far North Dike is also a good choice.
