I am headed to Dworshak Sturday to spend a week fishing. The water level has risen about 60 feet this month and is still about 80 some feet below full pool.

Has anybody been catching any smallmouth?

The rapid rise of the water has me concerned.....

I was up at Dworshak in July a few years back and it was at full pool. The log jams were so bad that I had to run my MinnKota and push the logs out of the way to get anywhere. We did catch some nice fish but not the quantity I was hoping for. We were camped at Dent and their electricity kept going off. Temps were over 100 and everybody was using their AC and overloading the circuit.

So the point I'm getting at is, watch out for logs. [Wink]

I was camped at Dent in late April Turkey hunting and it was 145' below full pool I was told that at some point it would be rising 6' feet a day, I can't imagine the fishing would be very good in those conditions, but i could be wrong i usually am, but i think the water would be cloudy and cold. I'm told that 2500 square miles of country drains into Dworshak.
Sorry i don't have any more than an opininon, but i would sure like to know how you do...

Back in the late 80's - early 90's we used to have an annual club tourney at Dworshak in June. We used to just slay 'em.The water level was usually a little low with clear water. It didn't get fished for bass to much back then.

last year first part of may i was turkey hunting in pierce. i saw a fellow pull in to the watering hole i was at with a nitro. so i had to chat him up ! he went out to his boat and showed me three smallmouth that looked more like a regulation n.f.l. football than a smallmouth bass. they weighed 3.5-5.2 lbs. they were catching them in the back of a creek by oldman bridge in 2-5' of water using a weightless 5" pumpkin pepper kalin grub. i wanted to bag the turkeys and go fishing with them ! but last year was tottaly diferent. last year there was little snowpack. this year i had to hunt by weippe as the snow was 5' deep where i normally hunt between pierce and headquarters. probably tons of run off and cold water. but in the backs of creeks ?

The Weippe / Pierce area... I know it well. I used to whitetail hunt up there from 1984 untill about 2002. Great times. I had a buddy who lived in Weippe and we stayed with him. He worked at the Jaype mill untill it closed down...... Sad....

Well thanks for the tip. I think the creeks will all be raging full on.... plus the weather report for next week looks cold and rainy .... but.... the weatherman has been wrong before!!
