Hello everyone! Just want some input/feed back on how bluegill fishing has been and some predictions on how the bluegill fishing will be the 29th and 30th. The weather looks a little unsettled but monday looks pretty good! So just wanted to see if you think the bluegill might be in the shallows! Thanks [Image: happy.gif]PANHOUND[Image: happy.gif]

Fished Pelican twice in the last week including today. Don't know exactly what you mean by "shallows"... I fished all over, even back in the "junk", but most of the action came in 5' to 8' of water, and especially in the channels and edges of the new reed beds that are just starting to peek up through the surface. I caught 20 LMB and 8 Gills today. Most of the Bass were on spinnerbaits, but when I went small the Gills showed up. Largest bass of the day was caught on a 1-1/2" twister tail grub.... Last week when I was up there I tore the Gills up, with nymphs on a fly rod. A lot of fun.. Everything I caught is still in there swimming..... go get em... :-))

Thanks for your input gorgehound!!! Weather outlook seems to be getting worse for those dates by the day![frown] Starting to doubt any decent gills action for those dates now...[mad]

Weather forecast I have for "Pelican Lake Recreation Management Area" (weather.com) is partly cloudy mid to upper 60's for both of those days. If that isn't perfect fishing weather I don't know what is.. :-))
Forgot to mention about the Blue Gill. Every one I caught on both trips had sores on them. Imagine it's some kind of parasite. Seen it before in there. Few of the bass had them too, but not near as bad as the gills. Anyone know anything about this??

The temps and cloud cover will be fine at Pelican this weekend, but the wind will be the bugger. You will have calm to light wind till noon, 1pm, then the west wind will BLOW !! it always does and makes the afternoon very difficult to fish. The afternoon wind will die off around 6ish and you can fish till dark.

As to the sores, there are round worms that infest most of the fish at Pelican. They are usually found in the gut and do not affect the flesh of the fish. You will sometimes find some encapsulated ones in the gills, you can just cut them out. Cooking also renders them harmless. Sushi is not recommended for Pelican fish. Some of the "sores" that you see are the result of the fish fanning beds. Everyone is getting ready to spawn when they get 3-4 days of stable weather and warming temps. The water temps are coming up, but haven't hit the mid 60's consistenly yet.
its a little parasitic worm, something to do with the snails in the water there. Anyway, a lot of the fish there have them, maybe 50% from what I saw last week. They are not dangerous to humans, the fish are still good to eat. They are little white things that just sit in the meat, you can see them and cut them out easily but if you miss one no biggie, they won't hurt you.
I had a question for anyone who may know, opening up their stomachs every fish had these little worms or something like that curled up into little spirals. I talked to the kid doing the muscle certification and he didn't know what they were but said all the fish have them. Any ideas?

You're right, that is a fairly typical weather pattern over here in "the basin". The fishing is usually better at those calmer times anyway..
None of the fish had nest fanning sores on them, just the little parasitic variety. Course I never caught any of the hogs, that are in there either. :-)) Maybe next time??
