Paved

Only the first 15 miles are paved. There are then 3 more miles of dirt road to get to the dam, then 8 more miles to get around to the boat ramp. The dirt road (last weekend) was washed out in many places, even before the dam, and REQUIRED a 4x4 to get through or around some spots. We saw several cars coming back down as we tried to go up and it was because cars would not make it thru the bad parts of the road. Even the paved road had sections that had washed away due to all the flooding. After the rain this weekend, I'm guessing some of it was impassable. There were many temporary bulldozed sections and many temporary repairs to the road. Lots of orange cones and warning signs. The road had sunk or broken away in many places around the lake. And there were small rivers running down the middle of the road in some places. We watched the weather very carefully while we were there and left at the first sign of rain as we didn't want to be stuck up there.

...just sayin. You asked.

I drove a toyota corolla around to the campground with no trouble on Monday. The post above is correct that the first part is paved and then gravel/dirt on to the dam and on around. There were some wet spots and some washed off spots (on the trip from the dam to the campground) but nothing that could not be negotiated in my small car. There was one 20' wet spot beyond the washed off spot that I am sure my wife would not have agreed to go through. Lucky for me she was not along. I went through without incident. This was all in the afternoon as the morning in Provo was pretty wet. Caught quite a few tiger, rainbow and cutthroats before leaving at 6:30pm. Pretty good day. I will likely be back on Saturday with a couple guys from work.

I was there Tuesday morning and you can drive anything to the dam. The road was dry and with some washboard areas. The north end of the lake was another story. The 20 ft wet spot by Tuesday had some very deep holes filled with water. I was glad to be in 4WD going through it. It would be fun watching a car or low clearance vehicle try it now.
Thanks guys for the info. I think friday I'll cruise up an give it a shot. Hows the water clarity?

Wow, I'm surprised at the range of conditions listed by these responses.

The road is fine. Some people may not take their Lexus up there since the dirt section (19 mile road from HWY 40 to the dam - 13 miles paved) will rattle any vehicle around a bit, especially if traveling slowly.

The key is to blaze through @ 40mph.[sly] Then you just float over the washboard.

Okay, maybe that's a bad idea.[crazy]

There are only 3 areas that you'll need to slow down for and take caution:

1. Rocks - Past the dam a little way, some rocks have made their way onto the road and you'll need to maneuver around them. Worst case scenario, you get out and move some. They're not huge.

2. Ruts - One very small area has become somewhat rutted due to mudheads spinning their tires in the wet spots. There's a path through all of that and if needs be, ride the high spots.

3. Sunken shoulder - There's one spot where the road always sinks a little bit and I'm pretty used to seeing it taped off and barreled. It's a section that spans about 30ft and drops off about 8 inches, then steps off to another 8 inches, and so on. There's plenty of space for a Humvee to get around it.

Go fish it. It's a blast right now. I was there on Saturday.

At the south end the water is clear.

The north end on Tuesday was like chocolate milk along the shoreline with a stiff breeze from the south.
