[cool][#0000ff]We normally don't like to fish the early morning just after a cold front had moved through. But we could only fish a short day today so we launched at the Knolls about 7 AM. Not to sounds of chirping birds but to the drive-you-crazy bleating of a thousand sheep. They were running down the road next to us and up the hills...each trying to outbleat the other. And there wasn't a cute one in the bunch.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Water was calm and the sun was coming up as we launched. Air temp 40 and water temp 56. Too cold but we got a few white bass out away from the bank as we worked our way to the point. Then the SW breeze that was forecast came blasting in from the east. Standard. It got worse and worse as the morning passed and it was hard to fish with any kind of finesse. It was supposed to be glass after 9 am but the glass got broken.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Couldn't even fish our spots for catfish. Barely able to smack a few white bass...and one silly carp that climbed on my second jig while I was reeling in a white bass on the top jig. Toothless golden walleye. Good fight and accepted my invitation to come home to the fillet board...for future bait.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]About 10:30 the wind was blowing harder and the water temp had barely reached 57. We motored back toward our vehicle and got almost there...just as the wind died down. Now that it was a bit calmer we put out the catfish rods and found a few willing kitties. TubeBabe scored the first and the biggest...about 25" and just over 8#. We each kept 4 for the smoker...with each of us catching fish in the 22" class as well as a couple of cookies.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Had to get off the water about 1 ish so we hit the beach and were packing up when Fishkillr and Ivan showed up. Double trouble. Good to hear that the whities moved in shallow. Water temps were just bouncing off the underside of 60 when we left.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]At least that place smelled more like sheep than skunk today. Turned out pretty good after all.[/#0000ff]

Nice report! You guys seem to kick the crap out of the fishies every time you hit the water!

It was great to see you and Tubebabe out there today. Things warmed up a bit and we were able to get some good #'s. All singles and seemed to be "shotgunned" in all places.

it was nice to see the tubes in person/action. I was the feller in the suburban that arrived as u were packin it in. managed a couple whiteys for all the sheep avoidance efforts drivin in and out.

Since my ancestors made their fortunes from sheep it's probably hypocritical of me to enjoy derogatory terms for the stupid things. Wooly buggers is pretty good but I prefer meadow maggots.

Glad ya got into them today. I gotta get my boat running and hit UL soon or I'm gonna come apart.

Way to go TD- excellent pics like always. Love the Lady.

It's finally starting to warm up in this part of the country. I think the kitties are calling.

[cool][#0000ff]Nope. Just don't report all the skunk days.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Seriously, we usually do pretty well because we know the waters...and the species we are after...and we try to plan trips to spots where we anticipate our best shots at success. [/#0000ff]

[cool][#0000ff]Good to meet you. Glad you got a couple of fish. Looked like you were bendo on something while we parked up on the hill to eat our late lunch snack and watch the water. Sheep smell didn't improve the "atmosphere".[/#0000ff]

[cool][#0000ff]As I am sure you know, there are a lot more terms for sheep that can't be posted on a family oriented forum.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]You haven't missed much up to this point...except getting wind-blowed and mistreated by finicky fish. But with the eventual arrival of spring (by July) we might just get some good fishing. Yeah, we have been catching a few fish, but not nearly what should be expected at this time of year.[/#0000ff]

where can I buy those kind of jigs you've always been using? I never seen those anywhere. Thanks.

The only place to get those particular jigs is from the master him self !! They come from the Tube Dude Tackletorium. It is worth the effort to make an appointment with the man and take the guided tour. The tails and tubes you can get at Cabela's, Fish Tech, or Sportsman's.

By the way, Dr. Orme always called em "Range Maggots". He was not very accepting of them, feeling that they were the best coyote food available !!

[cool][#0000ff]You know the way to my "playroom". The red glitter heads are at the end of a long chain of evolution...trying to find the "right" red heads. I make and use them for a lot of different plastics. One of the best variations is the custom 1/16 oz. heads on size 3/0 hooks for fishing walleyes in shallow water. I also custom color the plastics on those...using red dye on chartreuse glitter. [/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]As you have been advised, the tubes are "sometimes" available at Cabelas or Sportsmans. They are the Southern Pro Little Hustler...red scale top and chartreuse tail. That color disappears pretty fast after each new shipment. I mighta started somethin'. I buy mine online in quantity...in both 1 1/2" and 2". They are numero uno at Starvation for ALL species.[/#0000ff]
