Kali and I fished Magic Res. today, starting at 9 AM and limited by noon. We put in at Hot Springs...res. is full, and new docks. We fished Jack Lloyd 2 blades with a wedding ring and 1" of n.c. Several doubles. Early on the fish tended to be recent planters, but around 11 the big guys started hitting. Pulled in with two boats who came in with no fish. One was pulling Rapalas, and the other was fishing gear similar to ours, but on top. Our fish came from 15 and 20 feet. They tended to be closer to the sides in the open section of the lake. All in all, a good day. Mike

I was at Carey today. The wind was miserable. There were 5 of us fishing and we didn't even get a mosquito bite. Water temp was 56. Ron

I wonder if Untangler and I talked to you around Noon. We were bank yanking at Hot Springs. Untangler went up and talked to a guy about his boat. Was that you?
Did you come over and talk to 2 bank yankers about 150 yards east of the boat ramp?

I'll be damned! Yep, that was me. Should have known that the two of you, being as friendly as you are and as willing to share info, were members of this forum. Well, now I have a face to put on your many posts. Mike

Hey Mike, It was good to meet you. Your Hewescraft is a sweet boat. We started the day in our pontoons at Moonstone but got blown off when the wind kicked up and because we had four feet between us but only two flippers. We moved up to Hot Springs where Iwannabuggy Bankyankovitch outfished me once again but at least I learned a few things. Apparently, the trick to catching big fish from the bank is to strategically scatter all your gear in a rough circular pattern around your feet and then try to avoid stepping on it during the hookset and subsequent battle. Talk about fancy footwork - I've never been to the ballet but can't imagine it is any less graceful than the Buggys perfomance. The hookset itself involved at least six steps. I hope we run into each other again and congrats on your success. Eric

Do any of you magic res regulars have a recommendation for where I should try in my pontoon this week? I'll be pitching flies. I've had good success on several trips the last couple years at lava point. I appreciate any information!

That's certainly a good spot. You might also try launching at either East Magic or West Magic. If you do, I would work my way towards Hot Springs, but that is just a personal preference. Good luck. Mike

Cole, I fish out of a pontoon which can be challenging at Magic because of the wind. It is worth getting up an hour or two early to get some calm water before the wind kicks up and Hot Springs and Moonstone have areas that are sheltered from the wind. I am trying to sneak away on Friday and will probably go to Hot Springs if I can. Good luck.

Thanks!
Maybe I will have to try the hot springs area for something new. I'm going up on Thursday as long as the weather is decent. I will let you know how I do.

I haven't been out for awhile so not sure of water conditions, but the narrows is a good bet for tubes and toons.
The wind is out of the SW most of the time so theres some good shelter as well as great fishing.
Try dragging woolys or leech patterns close to shore
anywhere from the surface to 25'.....

Haven't had a chance to fish Magic yet but stopped by Moonstone landing yesterday on the way back from Boise looking for a camp site. It was, as everyone says, pretty windy but the water looked great. Is the river that comes in from the Fairfield side holding fish? Not familiar with the Magic layout but the "narrows" are referred to as a protected area for tubes /tunes. Where is this at geographyically?

Yep Camas creek holds plenty of fish, I'm told later in the year it's real good for Smallies i don't target them so i couldn't say for sure, but i can tell you it is great Trout fishing for sure.
The narrows is due South from where the Bigwood river and Camas creek meet at hot springs landing, it's about a mile long stretch leading out to the main reservoir easy access from hot springs.
Unless you have your heart set on camping at the lake the best place to camp is at Stanton's crossing there's lots of trees and the river is right there excellent river fishing later in the year and it's just a few minutes from hot springs.
Stanton's is about 3or4 miles East of hot springs on Hwy 20....
Good luck................................................................................

Jefstod, There is some real good fishing up at HotSprings Landing. About this same time last year I landed an 8 1/2 lb German Brown Just below the cliffs west of the Hot Springs boat dock. Right now the black and tan leech as well as the "Freddy Fly"(black and yellow verigated chaneele with black maribou tail and black hackle is working very well.

Thanks for the great info Deska and 2dogs. This forum is the "best" with guys like you willing to share knowledge. This equates to saving alot of unproductive exploration learning new waters, especially with a pull from Idaho Falls. All waters over here are "yuk". thanks again to both of you, its appreciated.

I fished the hot springs landing area today in my pontoon for about 3 hours. It was windy but I was able to find a few protected areas and trolled streamer patterns a bit. Caught 2 healthy rainbows one 16 and the other 18 inches and had a few other bumps but overall it was pretty slow. Tried quite a few patterns but the Halloween bugger caught the two fish. Hopefully the wind will settle a little bit but we are in idaho. Tight lines.

Flyguy, at least you don't smell like skunk![:p] This wind is killing me this spring. Lately I have been casting flies on the east side of Lava Point along the willows and doing quite well, will probly be there again on Sunday. Gonna go toss a fly for crappie at Cj Strike Saturday.

Slow for me today, only caught one average rainbow. The water is up a lot from last week and big objects were floating down the reservoir but it didn't look real dirty. For sure, wind is the great equalizer on that pond.
