Hi,
I'm new to the forums. I caught this fish today, and was wondering what it was. I ran it by a couple of other people, and no luck, so I was hoping to get some help here. I thought crappie, but the head looks all wrong. Thanks for the help. Smile

Hello Christy and Welcome,
Looks like a crappie to me too?

it does kinda look like a white crappie, but the head isn't quite right and the stripes of colors in the fins doesn't seem to check out either, at least compared to the crappie I've seen.

I posted the same question on another forum, and now they're telling me it's a tilapia. I googled it and a lot of the images look pretty close.

at first i thought it was another aquarium fish like a cichlid someone dumped, but after reading the other post i would say it looks like a tilapia to me, what did u catch it on?[fishon] here's the closest pic i found to it>>

There are some fantastic sites which have been developed by fishing magazines, State and Commonwealth government agencies, industry bodies and other related organisations to help people identify fish .

Talapia.

Syn,
I caught it on a live worm. It was in a small pond which is mostly stocked with sunfish, but also has some channel catfish.

these are black crappie, white crappie look almost identical with minor fin details and the color is much lighter.

the color combo with the exception to the stripes on the tail I would have said it was in the gill family,

but before I put my foot n my mouth I will have to ask, what state did you catch it in, be genneral northern of sothern part of the state.

I am leaning twards popular concences, but the location will be a for sure give a way.
I'm in the DFW area.

DFW?

if your in the Down Florida Way, I would say what the other guys are saying. I have some buds that will pack a few home when they go out in mid florida. They like them pretty well, even tho they dont target tallapia they say if they have any size to them they dont mind cleaning up a mess.

here is an example of where it is caught from that has a lot to do with the species.

in this photo below there are 4 different gill species caught out of the same hole in the ice. "long ear, short ear, sunfish and roach, the two on the bottom are crappie. "click to enlarge"

Im thinking its a bluegill/ sunfish hybrid. Maybe a rock bass if it has red eyes[Smile]

Very good eating!

DFW as in Dallas / Ft. Worth. [Smile] My daughter caught another tilapia a couple of days ago. They're commonly sold here in some grocery stores, so it's nothing to have someone buy some and release them if so inclined.

Its not just a tilapia, its a Blue Tilapia,100% sure.I'm in your hometown Fl,but i'm down south,a true southern boy,I've caught 2 ,I snagged them at night in the glades using spotlight,I see them nesting near the banks in canals down here, yea,I hear retrieving a live worm slow on the bottom, would get them, did you use any weight?a nightcrawler?I had to cheat to catch mine, also got a big one on castnet some time ago,did you eat it? the ones I got had their fry in mouth,I raised them to an inch and let them go.I ate their parents[angelic]my big guy was 3lb.12ounce,and the other just under 3.Congratulations,..I can't believe out of all these guys,I get outfished by a girl.[Image: sleeping.gif]I thought I had the only Blue Tilapia pics.Mine were'nt so blue from living in the glades murkywaters but I've seen them really blue like yours in clearer waters.Must of faught like heck,hu..I ve eaten the red tilapia before along with these. They are a little gamey for my taste.

Just admiring your fish some more.I caught one catching minnows one time.I raised it not knowing for some time what it was?He got very aggressive, chasing my Jaguar cichlid all over the tank.I donated him to a park.Sadowski park, they have a 750gallon tank.I used to maintain their fishtanks, also gave them other species.they even had an eel fw,anyway I allways enjoyed seeing him.I especially like their blue lips.I'm am very jealous of your catch, yet I'm very proud to be a part of,I hope you catch more!post anyothers you catch.the other tilapia you see are the common spotted tillapia,in Cuba I hear these species get in the 10 pound range, and I hear in Treasure lake bass have been caught using otherfishing meathods big enough to put your head inside, the mouth is literally a bucket mouth, bass 4to 5 feet long, thats what I hear from someone who lived there, and even fished offshore from an innertube. He also said the biggest bass was caught on an artificial spider, fishing bottom?.He did catch a pacu in my lake 40lb.I saw pic for myself. He lives also on the lake.
