Anyone fished green river lately? I have some friends coming from out of state for a few days and would like to fish green river by the end of the month. I hope the high flow would not be a disappointment to them. Any info helps. Thanks!

Fly Fish?
Shore or boat?
What section?

they are fly fishermen and I'll do spinner. I am thinking the section below the dam.

I too have been planning a trip for the end of the month. I called the Flaming Gorge lodge last night for an update on the flows. Right now the river is flowing at 9,000 CFS. The reason is, the Yampa river in Wyoming is at or above flood stage and they are trying to drop the lake level to be able to accept all the water the Yampa is sending in. Therefore there is no timeline as to when the river will drop to it's normal flows. They did say it was fishable, but highly reccomended a boat. I guess the foot trail along the river is well under water.

My buddy just got back yesterday... I'll see him tonight and hopefully be able to give you a report.

Green River fishing over the weekend on Saturday morning was good. Morning flow was at 6200 cfs and parts of the walkway above little hole were 2 feet under water but still accessable. Even with the higher flow fishing with a maribu jig was really good and I was able to catch 11 fish in 3.5 hours. I attached some pictures of the trail underwater. I have found that once you get a flow over 4600 cfs you start flooding the trails. I would guess once you get over 7500 cfs parts of the trail is not passable and you will need a boat.

They opened the turbines from the dam for the 3rd time this year. Typically they will open them up once a year but this year is an exception. The flow was taken to 8400 cfs by the evening and the Bureau of Reclamation are reporting an anticipated flow of 6600 cfs for 5-7 days. I found out that there is a spillway that can produce upwards of 25,000 cfs at full capacity that has only been used twice in the history of the dam and they are saying that there is potential of opening it for this year.

I just uploaded the pics. Good luck fishing. When are you going?

Pretty much the same report. He was told that the flows would be up to 9000cfs for about a week. Either way the fishing will be tougher, but as BFC showed, not unfishable. Marabou jigs and Rapalas both caught fish for them on this trip.

I fished the A-section of the Green over Memorial Weekend at 4700 cfs, most of which I used a spinning rod. In terms of anglers, it was dead. It was really good fishing while casting rainbow trout colored jerk baits and I caught several nice browns the first 3/4ths of the 2-hour float. I used the fly rod rigged with an egg pattern for the later 1/4 of the trip and caught 3 additional rainbows. Higher flows haven't proved to be bad on the fishing. They dislodge a lot of invertebrates and disturb smaller fish from their nursery habitat. Just use patterns that match the conditions and you should do well- streamers and nymphs for fly fisherman and jigs or crank baits for spin fisherman. Like another poster said, the Flaming Gorge Resort can offer you reliable up-to-date flow and fishing reports too.

Good luck, Ryno
