Of the urban ponds, I have fished Floyd Lamb, Lorenzi, Mesquite and Veteran's (Boulder City). Most of my fishing has been at FL. I did not like Lorenzi, too trashy and too many bums. Veteran's in Boulder City is nice and quiet but there is little shade. But there is little fishing pressure there so catching fish is easy.
I never had any luck at FL using prepared baits like stinkbait or chicken blood nuggets. Using nightcrawlers, hotdogs or shrimp produced the most successful angling for cats. Also contrary to popular belief, catfish are not bottom dwellers. I've caught many catfish using nightcrawlers under a bobber. It depends on where the catfish are located in the water column for that day. On windy days I'll find cats on the top of the column. You have to experiment by starting at the top with a slip bobber and then work down to a slip rig until you catch fish. If you have a two rod stamp, use both methods.
Also try chumming using corn, dry dog food, canned cat food or chicken blood nuggets. Chumming is legal at the urban ponds. Throw out your offerring about 30 feet out, then cast your line in the area you chummed. I use a kid's plastic bat with the tip cut off and blocked with styrofoam to form a pocket for the chum.
There are times that the cats just aren't biting so perserevere. FL is heavily pressured especially after stocking, which is now only monthly. Check the NDOW website or call 486-6738 for the stocking reports. Then get out there within a few days. At FL the stocking truck drops its load at the southeast end of the big lake near the white pumping station. The cats will follow the shore line to the north and usually end up on the northwest corner by the white line waste station (big PVC pipe to dump used fishing line).
Good luck and tight lines.

i personally have had the most luck at sunset park, then lorenzi park. i have only fished flsp twice skunked both times, i have never fished the boulder city pond, i figure if i'm gonna go that far i might as well hit the lake, one of my biggest largemouth bass came from sunset park it was just shy of 4 lbs that was one of 2 i caught that day, my wife only got the picture of the smaller one about 2lbs i'll post it below, i did however get out to lorenzi park for the stocking last wednesday and me and my wife both ended up with nice 3lb cats. hers was bigger by an inch but mine was more proportionate to its size hers was skinny wit a big ole head. sunset park lmb north end of the pond caught on a chartreuse YUM creature on a shaky head jig mid-morning

What time did you attempt your catfishing? I have noticed when I used to fish flsp heavily that the cat bite is over after nine am. My avatar was caught at flsp on kingkat or magic (im not sure the name) chicken blood. I've even caught kittys fishing for trout on oragne pb and salmon eggs.

It didnt get the name Floyd Scam Park for no reason.

I thought it was called that because of who it was named after. Floyd Lamb was a Nevada Legislaturer who got caught with his hand in the cookie jar in an FBI scam in 1983. He spent nine months in prison for his trouble.
When I moved here 41 years ago, it was Tule Springs Park ran by the city of Las Vegas. There was no entry fee and it was alot different looks-wise.It had a zoo (you can see the old pens on the southside of the big lake). Many locals were upset when Tule Springs was changed to recognize a crooked politician like Lamb. In fact, the city of Las Vegas entertained the idea of changing the name back to Tule Springs but the state legislature put in a clause that when they handed over the park to the city the name had to stay the same.

I heard the nickname from a old timer who fishes floyd on the regular. I never knew exactly why he called it that. The story you tell must be why they call it good ole' Floyd Scam

thanks for the history lesson. I always called it that for my own reasons and only fished it for the last 4 years. It's so close I could walk.

In 1983, five popular political leaders -- state Sens. Floyd Lamb and Gene Echols, Clark County Commissioners Woodrow Wilson and Jack Petitti, and Reno City Councilman Joe McClelland -- were taken down in one of the biggest public corruption cases in Nevada history.
When Lamb, the sting's initial target, was approached by FBI agent Steve Rybar for a $15 million loan through the Public Employees Retirement System, he was said to have demanded a 1 percent "finder's fee."
"It was amazing to think that the man who had this kind of legitimate power could be so easily bought off," said Rocha. "It was ugly, and a lot of people felt betrayed."
Lamb came from a respected and popular family. His brother, Ralph, served for years as sheriff of Clark County, and another brother, Darwin, served as a Clark County commissioner.
The others indicted in the scandal, dubbed Operation Yobo by the FBI, were convicted of accepting lesser bribes.
"The idea that when things happen in this state, you can't rely on state and local officials -- that the FBI has to come in and get it done -- brought a lot of negative attention to Nevada," Rocha said.
Three of the five convicted served full sentences. Lamb served nine months of a three-year sentence, released in part because of poor health. (He died in 2002.) McClelland's guilty verdict was overturned because of faulty jury instructions after he had already served his one year.

With not much mention of Sunset Park, I'll be the advocate since it's the only urban pond (besides bc) that I fish regularly
The best truth to your catfishing success as mentioned above is due (I would say 80%) to the amount of fish in the pond. Take into consideration that at Sunset alone there were 690 fish stocked with a 3 fish limit. Well, there are people fishing the pond day and night after the stock. All it takes is 290 people to fish a limit, then the place is empty!
I'll tell you from experience, Sunset and Boulder City are DEAD about 2 weeks after stock. For good measure, always plan to catfish the urban ponds within those two weeks otherwise the trip is just gonna be a sweaty sun tanning and bird watching sit haha

If you can go within one week after stocking, in the long run you will probably do the best, but it's unpredictable. The only catfish I caught at Sunset this season was 4 weeks after it was stocked, so you never know. I caught it on a chunk of hot dog. I also had a big carp that day, also on a hot dog, but it broke my line at the net.
Three other trips to Sunset since then got me zero catfish and only one bite. These trips were all within a week of stocking. The bite was on a hunk of anchovy. Luckily I got a carp on my last trip (6-15) which was 26" and weighed 8 lb, 1 oz I was using corn for bait.
If you want a good fight then you might consider going for carp as well as catfish. I know they are in Lamb & Sunset, but I don't know about Lorenzi. I've never fished there.

Use of fish as bait is not legal in all waters of Southern Nevada except Lake Mead, Lake Mojave and the Colorado River located in Clark County.
2011 Nevada Fishing Guide, p. 11:

".....In all other waters of the Southern Region, the capture, possession while fishing or use of fish as bait, whether dead or alive, or parts thereof, other than preserved salmon eggs, is prohibited."

Thanks for the heads-up. I read the regulations pretty carefully but I missed that one.

Hmm... didn't know that one. I used to slay Sunset Park cats with store-bought mackeral.
