look at this one from texas, [Image: gforum.cgi?do=post_attachment;postatt_id=617;] The rod and reel world record alligator gar weighed 290 lb, and the trot line, or unrestricted division record weighed 302 lb. Both were caught in the Rio Grande River back in the 1950s, and measured a little over 7-1/2 ft in length.

Alligator gars are widely sought after by bowhunters, but a much smaller following of anglers fish for them for sport. The states of Texas and Louisiana permit regulated commercial fishing for alligator gars, however, the demand is nominal. Hi davetclown,

I'd copy my post from the saltwater board but somehow my machine can't do it. Anyway, California claims (to my knowledge) at least three world records for sport caught freshwater/brackish water species besides a number of saltwater species. 1) Sturgeon and 2) Redear sunfish and 3) Golden Trout. I'm thinking it's the White Sturgeon but not sure and the Golden Trout is NOT a strain but the pure-as-snow Little Kern River Golden Trout. ha ha

Feel free to correct me if I'm mistaken.

michigan claims to have a sturgeon tipping the scales at 1000 pounds, but not the worlds largest.

I know the Golden Trout are native only to a hand full of states on the golden coast.

but a five pound blue gill (red ear sunfish) is out ragous! bouy would I like to see a picture of that one.

I caught a 2 pounder once and what a wopper of a fight that was. I cant even emagion a five pounder.[cool]

Hi there davetclown,

I heard of sturgeon in the Snake river also over a thousand pounds being caught in the 1880's. The hassle with the world record business is whether the record is based on rod and reel catch, All-tackle record, or world record for a certian line test rating, conventional or fly tackle and lastly a record for everyone, women or kids!!!! Arrrrrh!!!

I'm not a member of the IGFA anymore so I don't have a recent publication of world records. They don't offer a complete list on their site unless you're a member.

lol is that their angle on getting folks to join? [angelic]

I think I remember alstraila having world record for rod and reel in a recent publication or tour guide pushing 1200 pounds. but I dont think it was a white.

I caught a white once some time back, but it was a dink, only 58 inches, about 60 pounds on a 20 pound test line using a Zebco 202. needless to say I had to throw him back in the st clair river.

Hey, if you want to see something spectacular, head on over to Gander Mountain in my neighborhood. Not sure if all of them have replica's, but the one I go to all the time has replica's of record freshwater sports fish. You wanna see that huge bluegill? Man, that thing would easily cover a banquet platter!

I can only emagin, I have have pulled in a 14 inch gill once about 20+ years ago and one fillet filled the fry pan![shocked]

I have a pictur of it some where but havent seen it in years. still looking for it.

I'll see if they won't let me take pictures of the replica's they have. I can't imagine why they wouldn't. They are quite impressive!

that would be cool, they may even know which state/contry holds those records.
